At one end of the rink, Exeter Mohawks' netminder Trevor Hunt- er made 26 saves to lead the hosts to a 2-0 shutout win in their South- western Senior 'A' Hockey League home opener. At the other, was former profes- sional puckstopper Chris Pusey. But Pusey wasn't wearing the pads, he was playing defence for the Osh- ..weken Riverhawks. Drafted 106th overall in 1983 by ,the Detroit Red Wings of the Na- tional Hockey League, Pusey played one game with the Wings but spent two seasons with their American Hockey League affiliate, Adirondack. "I sold my equipment and started playing out four years ago. I had my chance," said Pusey who played Major Junior 'A' in Brantford and Hamilton. Last year he played one game for the Ingersoll B's of the Senior League but got hurt so he didn't play other than rec hockey. Look- ing back now, Pusey said he might have been a little reluctant to stop playing pro. "I quit when I was 21. I signed when I was 18. I went back for three years but it was stupid to quit now with the money." NHL draft picks seem-while:on the minds of the Mohawks as they have a couple of potentials that they would like to see get into their lineup. Owen Lessard was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks 184th overall in 1990 and Robb Graham was 135th overall in 1986 and he was drafted by the New York Rangers. '"He's (Lessard) told me he's go- ing to play. We've been talking to him for months," said Exeter coach Dave Revington. If those two came to Exeter the Mohawks would have a very explo- sive hockey club which could defi- nitely bid for the league title. Both gentlemen will be given special recognition for their efforts over the years during minor hockey night at the arena. The brief cere- mony will take place at approxi- mately 7:30 p.m. The Recognition Program was started to acknowledge the contri- bution coaches have made to their particular sport and to the commu- nity as a whole. Selecting the winners wus not an easy task as criteria included dem- onstrating respect for officials, op- pbeents and parents. Showing con- cern for all-round development of the athlete and presenting, through example, a , positive image of coaching. Hartman has been a member of the Exeter Minor. Baseball Associa- tion for more than ten years and in that time he has shown he is hard- working and enthusiastic and he has enough discipline in himself to coach a pretty tough age group, 16 and 17 year-olds. .DeBruyn is a past president .:caf; the Exeter Centennials Minor ScLidti ccr Association and has coac many championship teams. coached the Exeter Fury of Western Ontario Soccer this pact summer, giving a lot his time to many of the players has coached in the past. "This is as bad as were going to get. We'll improve on our condi- tioning and team play," said Rev- ington. Jeff McLenaghan was credited with what was the winning goal as he took a shot which hit several legs before slipping past Oshweken goalie Joe Persia. McLenaghan who is normally a defenseman, moved up to left wing because the Mohawks had seven blueliners in the lineup, something which is rare on any night. "He gave us some strength in the offensive zone," said Revington of McLenaghan who always plays a physical game. The other Exeter goal came when Jeff Warren scored into the empty net with just 33 seconds left to play. If it weren't for Hunter's perfor- mance, the Mohawks might have lost Sunday's game as they did not look as good as their opponent. "Every team is probably three weeks ahead of us. These guys have never played together," said Revington of the team Exeter iced in their home opener. The win lifted the Mohawks record to 1-1 as they dropped their opener 5-3 to the host Dorchester Dolphins Friday night. Against the Dolphins, Jon Buder had two 'goals for the Mohawks with Sean Reaume netting the oth- er. Forward Jamie English looked very good on Sunday and Reving- ton was pleased with him. English is just a year out of Junior B' where he played for Chatham MicMacs and the Aylmer Aces.
