Quick goal doesn't help
Hawks, beaten by Irish
By Dred Groves

EXETER - You'd think a goal 47
seconds into the game would give a
team a big lift. No so Friday night
in Exeter.
The Hawks' Dave Dalrymple
gave the hosts an early lead at the
South Huron Recreation Centre but
after 60 minutes, it was the Lucan
Irish winning the OHA Junior De-
velopment League game, 5-3.
Exeter played well in the second
period, outscoring the visitors 2-1
but last year's league leading scor-
er, Lucan centre Greg DePrest was
a big factor in the game with three
goals and an assist.
After the Hawks scored early,
Lucan coach Ken Needham said his
team did not panic.
Lucan undefeated
"It's always a concern when they
score that early but you just have to
keep plugging," said Needham.
More than once already this year,
the Irish have struggled in the open-
ing period. However, Friday, they
built a 3-1 cushion after 20 min-
utes.
"We seem to be notorious for
starting slow. I don't know why,"
said Needham.
In the first of five meetings be-
tween the two west division rivals,
it seemed that the Hawks were
waiting for something to happen.
They were searching for a lift that
would push them ahead and hope-
fully onto the winning aide of the
scoreboard.
"We were waiting for a break to
happen, we sat back. They
(players) were laid back and wait-
ing for a giveaway," said Exeter
coach George Pratt.
Late in the second period, the
Hawks got a very big lift when
Sean McCann scored his second of
the night off a strong play by line -
mate Shayne Robinson.
Robinson went down the right
side and although tied up complete-
ly by Irish veteran defenseman
Keith Robson, got the puck over to
McCann who scored.
"Shayne has a really long reach.

He led Sean well," said Pratt of the
goal which came' with 1:19 left in
the middle period.
On the play, Lucan starting goal-
ie Swart Ashton was shaken up and
had to be helped off the ice. He ap-
parently pulled a groin muscle and
his status is unknown. Steve Wat-
son went in and did not allow a
Hawk goal in the third.
While Ashton was being taken
care of, Irish forward Steve Mat-
thews and Exeter blueliner Jason
McBride squared off in a very long
fight.
Both were ejected and the Hawks
'had ,to go with leer tdefensemen in
the -final 20 minutes as Jamie Cor-

Cornish went after Lucan's Rob
Davis . who had checked Sean
McCann from behind. Davis was
given a five minute major plus a

"Our defence didn't play physical
enough in front of uur net, said
Pratt.
Both Exeter Hawks' Steve Farquhar (15) and Mark Lynn (3) came in to help goalie Kirk Du-
rand fend off Lucan Irish's Steve Matthews during Friday night's OHA Junior Development
League action.
He also said that Mark Lynn's in-
terference penalty which allowed
DePrest to score on the powerplay
in the third, really hurt as well.

Some, not all of
the Jays have class
Who will it be next
year?
In 1992 it was
Dave Winfield. In
1993 it was Paul Molitor.
The past two years the best
team in professional baseball
has gone out and brought in a
veteran who knows how to in-
spire the others.
When the Jays got Winfield they were getting someone who
could lead theleam on and off the field. His presence was felt
throughout the organization.
Saturday night, when the lays snatched the sixth game from
the Phillies, all our hearts went out to Molitor. He was a hired
gun brought in to get that key hit throughout the season.
Who would have thought that the former Milwaukee Brew-
er would have raised us all out of our easy chairs and sofas
every time he came to bat.
Molitor was the World Series Most Valuable Player and
rightly so, but whether he or American League Championship
series MVP Dave Stewart will be back is doubtful.
The Jays bring -them in, pay the big bucks for a year and
then ship them away. General Manager Pat Gillick says he's
going to trim the payroll by about $5 million.
If that's the case then why would Molitor or Stewart be
gone. The first guy to go is Jack Morris. He's the guy who did
not participate in the American League series or the World
Series but still strutted his stuff on stage Sunday like he was a
big part of it.
Sorry Jack, you and your very big salary are going bye-bye.
Speaking of Sunday's finale on stage at the Skydome, it's
amazing what comes out of the mouth of a professional ball
player in front of millions of people.

Panthers win 12th H -P field hockey title
By Fred Groves

EXETER - The trip up the ladder
> begun for the South Huron Dis-
trict High School Panthers.
Last week, the girls field hockey
team won two important games, the
first clinching a berth in the West-
ern Ontario Secondary Athletic As
sociation and the other clearly
showing that they are still the domi-
nate team in the Huron -Perth Con-
ference.

MITCHELL - For the second
*sight weekend the South Huron
District High School Panthers sen-
ior boys volleyball team have won
a tournament.
This past weekend they travelled
to Mitchell, where they sucoessfully
defended their tide, this time beat-
ing Owen Sound 15-13 and 15-1.
Jeff Lingard played well all
weekend and the Panthers received
strong blocking from Keith Craw-
ford, Simon Dinney. and Greg Ag-
new.
In pool play, the Panthers beat
North Middlesex and Elmira while

Association girls field hockey
championships on November 4-6.
Although coach Jim Workman has
now told than they receive an auto-
matic trip to the 16 -team tourna-
ment, the Panthers have been trying
to reach the finals honestly.
Tuesday in Exeter, the Panthers
blanked the Listowel Lords 4-0 in
the H -P semi-finals. Scoring in that
game were Brenyn Baynham, Cara
Gardner, Jo -Dee Rowe and Lisa
Forrest. That win gained them a
trip to the six -team WOSAA tour-
nament this weekend in Parkhill.
On Thursday, South Huron han-
dled visiting St. Marys Saluki 3-0
to win their 12th consecutive H -P
Conference title. St. Marys edged
Mitchell 1-0 in the other semi-final
last week.
You would think that winning a
conference championship 12 times
would bring little excitement from
the team but that wasn't the case
Thursday.
"I'd be upset if they weren't en-
thusiastic. They worked hard for it
and it's always a new team," said
Workman of his team which has
several new faces every year.
In Parkhill, South Huron will be
vying for its seventh straight WOS-
SA title.
"To some of them this is old hat,
but they're still keen," said Work-
man about Thursday's win.
Disallowed goal: Against St.
Marys, the hosts scored first but the
referee disallowed the goal because
he said the ball vyas not inside the
shooting circle when it was hit by a
South Huron player.
But Chrissy Ahrens made it 1-0
in the first half and it was 2-0 at the
break on a'goal by Danielle Miners.
A windy, cold day kept the Pan-
thers from mounting a bigger offen-
sive attack and it was late in the
game before Miners got her second.
South Huron faced the Saluki
twice during regular season , play
and the first time it was the Pan-
thers with an easy 7.0 victory.
However, the next meeting of the
two !cams saw St. Marys battle
South Huron to a scoreless draw. it
was the first time the Panthers did
not score on an opponent this year
in H -P play.
Thursday however was different
as the Panthers dominated the game
and capitalized on three good
chances.
"I just think they were trying to
shut us down the last time," said
Panthers' forward Brenyn Bayn-
ham. "St. Marys knew we'd come-
back, they had to score to win," she

said of Thursday's game.
Last week's games were just the
start of what the Panthers hope to
be a successful climb towards de-
fending their provincial champion-
ship.
Workman was very pleased with
the way the girls played last week
during the conference playoffs.
"I think my kids played smart.
Maybe they remembered the stuff
they learned in practice. They were
looking for each other."
A true example of the Panthers
playing smart was late in the gamc
when goalie Jana Webster let the
ball go past her into the net follow-
ing a shot from outside the circle
by St. Marys.
Scoring can only be done from
inside the 16-foot•radius circle but
if Webster had made the save the
ball would have still been alive and
playable. With her avoiding the
ball. the play became dead.
Workman said the Panthers tried
to make completed passes instead
of just hitting the ball to movit up
the field.
"They didn't rush their shots and
they followed their rebounds."
Looking ahead to WOSSA in
Parkhill this weekend, the Panthers
o will have some tough competition
with St. Marys, hosting No id-
dlesex Marauders and the,
Cowboys.
South Huron will play at 11 a.m.
on Saturday again at 12:45 p.m.
with the finals scheduled for 2 p.m.
on Saturday.
