Thurman's three -pointer sparks seniors over Madill
EXETER - A Stacey Thurman
three-point shot with two seconds
left in the third quarter made a very
big difference Thursday afternoon.
Ahearrby just two points, Thur-
man launched the bomb from her
favourite spot, the right side of the
court, to help the South Huron Pan-
thers to a 34-26 win over the visit-
ing F.E. Madill Mustangs.
The win lifts the Panthers high
school senior girls Huron Confer-
ence basketball record to an im-
pressive 34.
South Huron held a slim 19-14
halftime lead thanks to Jenny Rob-
ertson's three -pointer from the top
of the circle but the Mustangs came
out quick in the second half, domi-
nating early.
Kerri Lyn Case silenced the visi-
tors surge with a nice move to the
hoop through traffic which made it
21-16 for the Panthers. Madill
managed to tie it up but with 1:50
left in the third quarter Chris Pass-
more hit a long shot to put the
hosts back in from.
South Huron had a comfortable
five -point cushion alter Passmore
shot, it went off the glass, but for-
ward Candace Miller was there to
get the rebound and put it in.
Miller, who collected several re;
bounds during the game, was
fouled on the play and made the
foul shot for a three-point play.
Although she didn't figure in the
scoring, South Huron's Tara Pepper
played a majgf role as the forward
was outstanding defensively and
rarely took a break.
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers
worked the ball around, using the
clock and looking for the good
shot. Thurman made a nice pass
across the key to Becky Hartman
with 24 seconds left in the game
and with five ticks on the clock
left, Hartman scored again.
Thurman and Passmore led the
winners with seven points each
while Christine Carr paced the
Mustangs with 10.

THE BROADSTREET BULLIES
The PHILADELPHIA FLYERS; when one says the name, eve-
rybody has visions of the BROADSTREET BV1 L WS. There was
BOBBY CLARKE, .a :feisty Little gamer. I once saw TERRY
OtREILLY hit him behiad1heaibt:in the ;BOSTON GARDEN in
theplay-offs one year and tear the museles•off the bone of his leg in
the grout area. He taped up the leg andtried to come back.
Remember BERNIE PARENT, who for two years was the best
goalie in the world? Remember how he almost single handedly beat
the BOSTON BRUINS? Then there was BILLY BARBER, who
taught the RUSSIANS how to dive, but at least he_got upp with a lit-
tle smile on his face. Boy, did he have a nice part of bands.
What about REGGIE LEACH with that slap shot? One year he
must of got hundred goals against us. (At least it seemed like a hun-
dred). I remember he let one go and caught GERRY CHEEVERS
in the face. Down goes CHEEVERS. I figure he's dead and I'm
heartbroken. There's my meal ticket laymmgg there, I run out on the
ice, there's blood coming from CHEEVERS everywhere. I say,
"GERRY, GERRY, speak to me, speak to me! Are yyou alright?"
CHEEVERS oens one eye:and says, "Ikrt ok GRAPES. HOW sthie
crowd taking it?"
GARY DORNHOEFER was like a rock in front of the net and
HOUND DOG KELLY, always stirring things up. There was slick
RICK MACLEISH and BARRY ASHBEE making -sure BER-
NIE could see the puck by nailing anybody who stood in front of the
PHILLY net. Remember the two WATSONS, JIMMY AND
JOE? They were solid back there. Perhaps the toughest defenceman
in the whole league was EDDIE VAN IMPE. Remember the num-
ber he did on the RUSSIAN? Sweet stuff.
There was ANDRE "Moose" DUPONT who backed'down from
nobody, and the most popular player DAVE "THE HAMMER"
SHULTZ.
Lot of tough guys, althoouugh one guy I thought never fit in with
these honest boys was SALESKI a bit ofphoneyy. I remember one
time MOOSE DUPONT had a fight with JOHNATHAN and was
cut up pretty good, but he was in throwing them at the end. Later in
the game there was another fight in the comer between two other
guys and our JOHN WENSIN was watching closely. SALESKI
comes up behind, WENSINK, turns around and guess who has to
take them on? you guessed it, "THE MOOSE." •
The HAMMER was something else. I saw him when he was a
rookie and I was coaching THE ROCHESTER AMERICANS and
he was playing for the RICHMOND ROBINS. He had the league
in terror. I said to myself, Hey, this is good, I'm going to build the
AMERICANS like this," which I did.
The fust year I coached against THE BULLIES while with
THE BRUINS, I could see we had a ton of talent, but we weren't
tough. So out went the floaters and in came the gnnclers. STAN
JOHNATHAN JOHN WENSINK, TERRY O'REILLY,
WAYNE CASHMAN? AL RECORD BOBBY SCHMAUTZ.
THE HAMMER says in his book that PHILLY had a tough team
and BOSTON had a tough team, but THE BRUINS had three guys
who were nuts (I don't know if he included the coach or not).
The games between the BRUINS and PHILLY, were classics
and even the exhibition games were something. I remember one
game in the SPECTRUM, we had a brawl that lasted a half hour.
and ended with CASHMAN and PAUL HOLGREM duking it out
in the corridor outside the dressing
rooms. Both got suspended. Theplay-
offs wan 'war. I can recall 1977; we
played over ninety minutes in the
semi-finals, game #2 April 26 when
TERRY O'REILLY scored on a pass
form RATELLE.
PHILLY was the best draw in the
league. When I coached the COLO-
RADO ROCKIES, I remember PAT
QUINN coming into DENVER and
we had 16.500 in the building and two
thousand waiting outside to get into the
bw1din.
The Towers to be" who are now in the NHL, really don't like to
hear the name BROADSTREET BULLIES because it gives the
league a bad image (Honest). All Ilgot to say is "It's too bad that we
don t have more teams like THE BROADSTREET BULLIES and
THE BIG BAD BRUINS." Maybe we wouldn't have half empty
buildings at gazes.

High school sports
Weekend road trips
were very successful
WOODSTOCK - It was a very successful weekend for South Huron
high school teams as they hit the road for tournaments.
In Woodstock, the senior girls basketball team lost the first game but
came back to win two straight. The senior boys volleyball team were at a
tournament at Medway and won that event while the midget girls volley-
ball team were in Seaforth and won a pair of games.
Close opener: The senior girls lost a very close 24-23 decision to Delhi
in the opener of the College Avenue Secondary School tournament as Tara
Pepper led the offence with eight points.
That was followed by a 36-30 win over Stratford Central in which Sta-
cey Thurman had an outstanding game hitting for 18 points including a
three -pointer in the third quarter. Angela Gould played well adding nine.
In the consolation final, the Panthers pushed Arthur Voaden to overtime
where South Huron's Jenny Robertson got the winning basket in a 33-30
victory.
With a minute to go in the game, Thurman was fouled while attempting
a three -pointer and while at the line, hit two -of -three to tie the game forc-
ing overtime.
Thurman had nine points while both her and Robertson hit important
three -pointers in the fourth quarter.
Cross-country: At the recent cross-country meet at the London Ski
Club and hosted by Banting, senior Molly McClure was the best South
Huron runner as she finished 34th out of a field of 133 runners.
Competing for the senior boys were Glen Spicher and Shawn Wumt
while the junior boys team was made up of Jeremy Janke, Eric Hundey
and Jeff DeBloeck. Midget boys running were Joey Forrester and Scott
Rasenberg while Cathy Regier was the lone midget girl.
