GRANTON - There was no ser-
vice at the St. Thomas' Anglican
church on Sunday, but a number
L, from the congregation attended the
Harvest Thanksgiving parish, ser-
vice at St. Pauls Church in Kirkton.
The Rev. Stephen Emery celebrat-
ed the Holy Eucharist and his mes-
sage was about having a dependent
relationship with God. A time of.
fellowship followed the service.
At the Granton United Church,
world-wide Communion Sunday
was observed when Pastor Noma -
lie Voakes entitled her sermon 'The
King's Round Table', and the les-
sons were read from Exodus 20,
Philippians 3 and Matthew 21.
The anthem 'All who Hunger'
was sung by the choir.
Flowers were placed in the sanc-
tuary from the funeral of Stanley
Hawkins of Mitchell, husband of
Mary (Forrest) Hawkins, formerly
of Granton, who died suddenly on
Wednesday. September 29.
A breakfast which preceded the
service was well attended.

Bannockburn fall hike
VARNA - Sunny skies greeted
approximately 350 people .at the
20th annual fall , hike _at .Bannock-
burn Wildlife Area in Stanley
Township onSunday.
"We were overwhelmed by the
attendance. Two girl guide groups
and one cub pack along with many
families walked the trails," said
Kate Monk, the ABCA's Communi-
cations Manager.
The Authority moved the hike
from the traditional third Sunday in
October to coincide with Ontario
Hiking Day, the first Sunday in Oc-
tober. The leaves changed quickly
the week before the hike, and the
weather was perfect for an after-
noon outdoors.
Six Authority staff were at the
different ecosystems along the
trails. They talked about the flora
and fauna of the area, and while the
birds and wildlife were shy with all
the people around, the salmon trav-
elling up the Bannockburn River
weren't tooconcemed about the
spectators.
The visitors had a choice of cold
apple cider or Doug Hocking's spa
tial recipe for hot apple cider. In to-
tal, 80 litres of cider and one-half
bushel of apples were consumed.
Monk expects that many of the
people will return to Bannockburn
Wildlife Area when there aren't
quite so many people around.

How much for a
(slightly) used
garbage truck?
EXETER - Anyone looking for
a used garbage truck may be able
to get one for a song.
The old Exeter truck will be
going up for public auction in the
County equipment sale on Octo-
ber 23, and some council mem-
bers were concerned about a lack
of a reserve bid.
With new garbage trucks going
for about $100,000. councillor
Bob Spears asked about the pub-
lic works committee's recom-
mendation for a lack of a reserve
bid.
"Isn't there still a fair bit of val-
ue in that unit?" Spears asked. "1
_ guess . that my concern is this
-1ktay be sold well below its
value."
Hoogenboom said the commit-
tee made its decision carefully.
"I think most of the local pri-
vate garbage contractors know
we have this truck for sale," said
Hoogenboom, but said it has sat
empty on town property for a
year, without drawing any inter-
est.
"We felt that if it was going to
be sold, it would be sold at that
sale," said Hoogenboom.
Councillor Ervin Sillery said
he too felt the truck should have
had 'a modest reserve bid on
i t".
When reeve Bill Mickle asked
if the public works recommen-
dation should be amended,
councillor Robert Drummond
cautioned that a reserve price
might mean "we'll probably be
bringing it back home".
Drummond noted some parts
have been pirated from the
truck, so it's not the same vehi-
cle it was when taken off the
mad.
The town replaced the gar-
bage packer with a now model
last year when it was revealed
the vehicle probably wouldn't
pass a safety test. The final
word is that the truck will go up
on the block October 23, and
will sell for whatever anyone is
willing to bid.
