GRAND SEND - How aongg4es
it take to assemble a Model Tirord
from baste components?
That question was answered Stm-
-day . afternoon at the Lambton Mu -
_scum's 'Antique Car Rally. The Ca-
nadian Model T assembly team
;from Kitchener, which competes in
timed competitions in Canada' -and
the United States put on a demon-
stration for visitors at thcrally.
'The four team members laid out
HenryFord's most basic car's com-
ponents - chassis, drivetrain, -axles,
wheels, radiator, dashboard, gas
tank and exhaust - and without ap-
pearing too -hurried, put it all to -
gather in a.running car in less than
seven minutes.
The Model 'T was the car •that
brought automobile transportation
to the masses. -That car is citidited
with shaping the direction ,of. the
20th -.century in away -that is_only
now being understood.
Bob Tremain at the museum_said
,that Sunday's car fully is part of a
.growing .appreciation of :the 20th
century. With several hundned:peo-
ple arriving to see the 57,antique
and classic cars on display, Tre-
main said that nostalgia for the cen-
tury's early years is becoming just
as important as -preserving pioneer
artifacts.
"We're starting to pay more atten-
tion to the 20th century," said Tre-
main. "And .the automobile is the
essence of this century."
The museum once gave little
thought to displaying anything
newer than 1900, but is now recog-
nizing that the 1920s was also an
era of change important in this re-
gion. The.museum is even consid-
ering adding a 1916 :Buick to its
permanent collection.
Sunday's rally, however, attracted
automobiles far newer than that.
Sponsored by Bluewater Ford of
Forest, visitors could marvel at
everything from a rare 1920 Olds-
mobile to a couple of early fire
pumpers, to a row of six restored
Mcaaedes.from.the.1950s and 60s.
_7Thc.autoas>ally has been a favour
ite item on .the museum's.aummer
agenda.. Although competing with
other car shows in.the region, it has
done well for about a decade, de-
spite a hiatus in 1992.
