Shooting concentration
at Ram biers camp
HURON PARK - "A good shot comes with a good foundation."
Those words of instruction came from Paul James last week as he tried
to teach over 50 young basketball players how to shot a ball.
Most of us take it for granted, but like any other skill there are seveital
basic moves which have to be mastered.
James, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa was the camp director for the weatk-
long program hosted by the Forest City Ramblers of London and conduet-
ed at the Huron Park Recreation Centre.
Elbow in, wrist cocked and ready to fire like a gun...just a few more
things to remember when it comes to shooting.
James said the shooter's eyes should 'be focused somewhere around the
basket.
"Pick out a very specific spot...super concentrate on that spot," explained
James.
He also said that shooting a basjcetball at the hoop is like shooting inside
a phone booth with no top. The player has to shoot up and over the glass.
At the Forest City Ramblers Camp in Huron Park, James and his fellow
instructors taughtas, basics to 54 girls between the ages of 10 and 16, last
year there web'41.
The advantage of having a week-long camp is that the participants get to
stay right at the facility. Campers were housed at Centralia College last
week.
"I've run a number of camps and we prefer the overnight camps. You've
got them right here," said James.
He said that while the camp does teach the girls a lot of skills, one of the
main purposes of the program is to motivate them so they will go home
and spend hours shooting hoops in the driveway.
Basketball is a sport which is obviously more popular in the United
States than in Canada. There are numerous scholarships and school pro-
grams begin at the elementary levels.
