Although it's summer school is popular LUCAN - No more teachers, no more books... While many students pre very glad when the summer rolls around and they can get out of the classroom and away from teachers, this summer has seen many instructional sports camps in the arca. Youngsters must not be to disgruntled with teachers as all the camps have been well attended. There has been a soccer camp hosted by the Exeter Minor Soccer Association, the Exeter Minor Baseball Association's week-long camp, figure skating in Lucan, basketball out at Huron Park and of course, the Shamrock Hockey School. Players of all ages strapped on the blades and pulled on the familiar hockey equipment as they were put through their paces at the Lucan Arena last week. One of the instructors at the hockey school is Lucan. resident Ian Craig who says some form of hockey school is beneficial. "I think a week is a must for every kid. With the cutbacks in minor hockey, a kid is lucky if his team is the only one on the ice." Many minor hockey associations are finding that due to ice time demands, they have to put two teams on the ice for practice at once. Craig played three seaso th the Lucan Junior 'D' Irish and two years with the London Junior ' Diamonds, now called the Nationals. He explained that those who come to the week-long Shamrock Hokey School, now in its ninth year, are housed at a camp on Highway They have a full-day of activities including watching videos, outdoor recreation and two ice sessions, each an hour and five minutes in duration. "If they're on the ice longer than an ter and five minutes, l find they get worn out," said Craig. The week starts with skating forwards, backwards and learning proper balance. That is followed by puckhandlntg, passing and other basics. - "We just progress from the basics all the way through. A lot of our kids have been here six years and they know the drills." Most hockey schools have at least one big name attached to it and the Shamrock Hockey School was no exception, as goalie Jeff Reese formerly with the Toronto Maple Leafs and now a Calgary Flame helped the shooters and goalies alike.
