GRAND 'BEND - The Huron
Country :Playhouse dinner auction
will soon be here. To be held in
Exeter's South Huron Recreation
Centre on October 15, it aims to
'better last year's $39,000 raised to
.tfrelp the theatre's renovation pro-
jec t.
The auction committee has •al-
ready acquired many of the items
:rthat will be auctioned off this year,
including a watercolour by Exeter
artist Tim Clarke, a week for two in
the Turks and Caicos Islands, an
..antique vase, a computer, and many
other items on a list that is still
growing.
Bill Graham, representing this
year's corporate sponsor Deer Run,
presented a cheque to the auction
committee Friday evening at the
company's subdivision headquar-
ters south of the Pinery.
David Crone, chairman of the
fundraising committee said while
the Playhouse has some way to go
-in-:raising -the $4.5 million needed
:to -complete the :theatre. upgrade
-41.3'million has been received so
:far :in fundraising and provincial
:pants), this second annual auction
is a good event to raise awareness
of the summer theatre's needs.
Last ear's auction, although its
proceeds are small compared to the
overall target, can be called a suc-
cess in that regard, said Crone, and
added that it is a cost-efficient
event in its own right.
"However, $39,000 with a ticket
price of $35 isn't bad," said Crone,
pointing out similar auctions in the
London area generate similar fig-
ures with $150 ticket prices.
The key to the whole project, he
said,-islo'secure the vitality of the
Huron Country Playhouse in :the
Mired -Bendarea. Estimates say it
-brings about S6Imilllon into the lo -
:cal economy yearly, including
• money spent:in restaurants, at mo-
tels, stores and other places visited
by theatregoers.
The renovations, while needed
for fire safety regulations, won't
necessarily make for a larger thea-
tre, but may allow for an extended
season. With better insulation
against the elements, the "shout -
',tiers" of the summer season can be
pushed out, allowing a longer play-
bill. There may even be room for a
idiewzat c hristmas.
"'Inhere a need for Christmas en-
tertainment. I don't know," said
Crone, but added that is an impossi-
bility now with the present draugh-
ty and cold building.
Other fundraising events, aside
from the auction, include a possible
casino -style gambling evening, a
star campaign for patrons to pur-
chase bronze, silver, or gold stars
on display at the theatre.
A "seat sale" is also being consid-
ered, lin which donors can have
their names engraved on a plaque
on a theatre seat.
October's auction, however,
comes first. One question being
asked by organizers is whether or
nor Grand Bend mayor Tom Law-
son will be buying back his Christ-
mas crackers.
The story goes that Lawson end-
ed up with three dozen cartons (a
roomful) of the crackers after
someone put his. name down on
them at a silenhauction at Victoria
Hospital. Lawson 'honoured the
bid, and later donated thein to the
Playhouse for their auction -last
. Year.
-i$Omlaone -again put his name
-tdewniettaisitent auction sheet, and
he bought them back. He's re -
donating them again this year.
At the Deer Run sales office Ridgy evening, Exeter Artist Tim Clarke unveiled the watercolour
he is donating to the Huron Country Playhouse Dinner Auction this year. The painting is from
his trip to the Ottawa River last year. From left are fundraising chairman David Crone, Deer
Run sales lPP Connie Graham, Tim Clarke, and South Winds Development president Bill Gra-
ham. South Winds.developed Deer Run, this year's auction corporate sponsor.

Exeter got grant for sewer
. EXETER - A new sewer tine to
ease flooding and open up new sub -
;division growth in east Exeter
ashould be started in about two
months and finished by the year
end.
The town received
word last week that a
$169,000 grant is
coming from the prov-
ince to pay half the
cost of the $338,000
line. Council has dis-
covered they had
5115,000 in reserve funds they can
use against the project.
"Did we realize we had $115,000
at the end of the year, or did this
just come to us?" asked councillor
Bob Spears at last Tuesday's coun-
cil meeting.
Clerk treasurer Liz Bell said the
"Weh
the p
creal i
funds were on the books, but were
previously only used for emergency
repairs to lines. The money is reg-
istered with the province. but hasn't
been used for a while.
"11 was almost
like a hidden bank
account for us," said
mayor Bruce Shaw.
Spears asked if
the whole project
would be tenderest
out, or if any of
could be done by
town works staff.
"No, because its under jobsUnw-
rio. We had to sell the project by
creating jobs," said administrator
Rick Hundcy.
"I was wondering if we could,
swing any of our own resources
into this project, but you're saying
ad to sell
roject by
ng jobs,"
we can't," acknowledged Spears.
Shaw said a completion date for
the .main line is hoped for before
Christmas. The boring under the
river may have to be done later be-
cause the Conservation Authority
only allows such work at certain
times of the year.
Councillor Ben Hoogenboom
said the sewer extension, known as
the Prydc Interceptor, has been
talked about by town councils for
years, and finally it will be con-
structed.
"It's really good news," said Hoo-
genboom.
Reeve Bill Mickle said part of the
good news was that it was -at least
going to be half -funded with pro-
vincial grants, rather than have the
entire burden on the property taxes.
Parked van damaged on side road
EXETER - Over the past week,
the Exeter OPP say they have in-
vestigated several instances of wil-
ful damage and theft in the area.
In addition to the theft of win-
dows from a new home in Stephen
Township, police investigated a
break-in at a shed balkiad Usborne
Central School .balrlNten July 26
and August 3.
Stolen was a 25- jerry can of
gasoline. It was later foirnd,rminus
the fuel,
Sometime overnight on August 3,
thieves broke into and caused dam-
age to a van parked on Sideroad
20-21 in Hay Township. Police say
the culprits smashed the passenger
side window of the blue GMC van,
stale an Alpine AM/FM cassette
atdreo (with green illuminated but-
tons). and flattened two tires on the
van -before leaving.
Police are also saying an 11 -foot
Boston Whaler inflatable dingy
broke loose irom its mooring on a
Hay Township beach on July 30. If
anyone has found the dingy they
are asked to contact the OPP.
