Doc Hanley, Kid's father, a somewhat conservative drummer for his band the "Jack Hanley 'Dixieland Stompers" is get- ting full swing into his own musical career. However; despite their mu- tual love for music, the two have no appreciation for the sound of each others. _ The Old Man's Band, by Play- wright John Roby, looks at what happens when Kids brother Phil breaks his arm and Doc finds a natu- ral replacement in Kid who is lured by a hundred dollar paycheck, to fill in, and play stand-up`bass with the Stompers. Despite his own musical pursuits, Kid plunges in and learns not only a new instrument but a little about life. It's a touching look at the genera- tion gap, and the ties that bond a fa- ther and son. Just as Mr. Hanley follows a "do as I say not as I do" policy Kid is living -life to the fullest while being stuck in his small town of Middleton Nova Scotia. Both father and son experience a heart breaking loss and both Team a little something fromeach other in the process. The play encompasses a love in- terest, abuse, and several other problems that are in some cases not completely carried through. Roby, along with Director Katherine •Kas- zas, have created a potential major hit but both need to look again at some areas. The acting was strong, however some lines were lost when actors didn't wait until the audience fin- ished laughing, as the witty lines, such as Kid's definition of the SAT's is a multichoice pigeon hol- ing device for the establishment, keep the audience chuckling. Katheryn Rose's husky voice per- fectly offsets the swinging Dixie- land jazz, to create a play that has equal appeal for the young and the old, and allows the audience to ap- preciate both. With an impressive cast, and an interesting set The Old Man's Band is sure to please any music lover The Old MZin's Band has already filled many seats, but if you would like tickets the play will be running until August 21, and they can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 523-9300. The Old Man's Band, starring Kathryn .Rose who plays lead singer Jesse Weldon, guitarist :Christopher Earle who plays Kid Hanley, Gabe Hogan as Bugsy -the bass guitarist, and Paul Braunstein, who portrays the drummer Stix., join the Blyth Festival for the first time as Kid Hanley's Band. Battling bugs with bugs is Zurich man's business By Erin Lobb T -A staff ZURICH - Lakewood Nursery and Garden Centre, in Zurich, has found a new way to stop what's "bugging" them. Bio Bugs, Mike Miller's latest entrepreneurial undertaking, is a new way to combat pesty insects in and around your home, garden, greenhouse, window box, and trees. It's a strange concept, bat- tling bugs with bugs but accord- ing to Miller, who has used the product himself, it really works. The bugs, which come from dif- ferent parts of Holland and Cali- fornia, are the products of the Saf- er company which deals in pesticides that use only natural and safe ingredients. Bio Bugs are beneficial insects that attack selected plant insects. The highly specialized diets of the insects are such that they only cat the offending insect pest. One ex- ample of these are ladybugs which can be used to control aphids and other soft bodied insects in the home garden. According to the Safer company the Bio Bugs work by effectively destroying their enemy by sucking out their juices, or parasitic insects will lay their eggs inside the de- veloping eggs of the enemy. There are seven types of benefi- cial insects one of particular inter- est is the Trichogramma which is popular with many Grand Bend area customers who have prob- lems with gypsy moths, however the lady bugs remain the most popular. The method of application is as simple as opening the package containing the insect in their co- coon, larva, egg, or adult stage, and sprinkling them over the area containing the pest. Miller recommends that the in- sects be released in the evening so that they settle in on the plants, and don't just fly away. Miller also stresses that the tim- ing of the insects is important as they must be released at the begin- ning of the problem or the Bio Bugs will die because of a lack of food. Because they are totally depen- dant on their enemy for food they will only survive as long as they have pests to live on, so the in- sects themselves can't become a problem. The only one like it in the area, Millers business is slowly building but he says he needs more feed- back from his first customers, "It's a good idea, but until it's tried people are reluctant." Miller feels that the environmen- tal approach is a trend that the in- dustry is moving towards, but man made chemicals are still need- ed for some insect problems. The insects, which cost $15.95 to $19.95, are an inexpensive al- ternative to chemical sprays which Miller says are not feasible for large trees. "It's an idea whose time has come," says Miller, whose Nur- sery business is in its 13th year, "we're committed to this project and hope to continue it."
