Children's theatre well received
By Erin Lobb
T -A staff
GRAND BEND - The Huron
Country Playhouse (HCP) had a
different type of entertainment on
Friday, and only a select few were
invited to watch it.
This past week 19 girls took part
in the Huron Country Playhouse
Childrens Theatre School. The
four year old program is run by
Carl Zvonkin is an introduction to
theatre for the children that takes
them right back to the basics, and
Friday' they will be involved in a
performance which will showcase
what they have learned over the
past week.
Stage directions, learning a role,
staying in character, mime, dance,
and voice training are some of the
activities that Zvonkin teaches in
the portable classroom at the thea-
tre. "We try to teach the activities
through a game format," says
Zvonkin, "there are many, many
theatre games that we use to make
learning fun, and it is important
that it remain fun."
A teacher himself for the past 25
years, Zvonkin helped out as a vol-
unteer in past years before he be-
came the instructor. Zvonkin, who
sees changes ahead for the pro-
gram, would like to see a real chil-
dren's theatre which would operate
monthly_ instead of weekly ses-
sions, and accommodate a larger
number of children. However,
The Huron Country Playhouse Children's Theatre program held their end of the week
show, on Friday, for the 19 participants. Here Elizabeth Poli on the left, Lisa Volchoff,
kneeling, Melissa Bryan Pulham, and Katrina Michielsen on the right, rehearse for their
skit entitled Ooga Booga Island.
Zvonkin says that with all the reno-
arations • being done at the theatre,
.the changes will occur gradually
over the next few years.
Many of Zvonkin's students are
back for their second or third yeat,
like Stephanie Kuhn, of London,
who is back at the theatre school
for her third year. "I really enjoy
being on camera when Carl films
us. All the lessons helped me to be
less nervous on stage and helped
me to get a role in the HCP's pro -
\duction of Oliver." Kathy Keskin-
en, of Exeter, is there for her first
time this year, when asked what
she•had learned through the week
she replied, "I learned how to use
my diaphragm, and lots of other
things I have never done before."
Keskinen says she would like to
pursue acting, and may come back
again next year.
Zvonkin would like to change the
format of the program slightly for
the week of August 23 to the 27.
Instead of having only older stu-
dents, Zvonkin would like to incor-
porate 10 and 11 year olds as well.
Friday's performance for the par-
ents involved it dance sequence, a
skit, and two songs. "A Whole New
World", and "William Tell" which
are sung by the entire company.
Not only were the girls able to
make new .friends, and learn more
about each other, but they were
able to show off some of their tal-
ent, and learn some new skills. As
Melissa Bryan -Pulham said, "it was
,a lot of fun, I learned a lot about
theatre and look forward to learn-
ing more."
Big bloomers
This Crown Tiger Lily of Eric Heywood, of Exeter, reached
an incredible seven feet six inches. Heywood says that the
five year old plant had 114 blooms in all, and all three
stems have come from the same bulb.
