ARVA - •Still in the hunt for a
Playoff 'spot in the treat •Lakes
Senior Baseball League, the Exeter
Express swept a doubleheader from
host Arva on Saturday.
They took the opener 9-3 and lat-
er, won 10-0. 1t wasn't a perfect
week for the Express as they lost 8-
3 to Strathroy, 'tine :of the team's
they are battling -for a playoff spot.
Scot Russell went the distance on
the mound for Exeter but according
to coach Walt Parkinson, didn't
have much help.
"He threw well but we gave up
some -unearned runs early that cost
us.the-game, :said Parkinson.
Strathroy scoured four runs in the
bottom • of the first inning on four
hits:and three Exeter -errors. The
hosts added one more in: the second
butdidn't score :again .until they
plated two:in::the sixth and another
in the seventh.
Exeter: managed to make it a 5-3
game_ at one point _tis 'they scored
one in the fifth thanks tol4otRus-
scll's double and then two in .the
sixth. Russell had -an rbi single as
Rob Dickey and Rick Boon scored.
Late in the game, ,Exeter's Fred
Gregus and Strathroy's Tom Woo-
diwiss got into an argument.
"It just started out verbally but af-
ter we shook hands it blew up,"
said Parkinson.
After the game, both teams were
arguing and pushing which brought
immediate action' from the league
president who was at the game.
"Apparently they did everything
that night," said Parkinson as far as
disciplinary . actions were con-
cerned. "It was a one game suspen-
sion for Fred and me."
The last time these two teams
played, the Express managed to
score 28 runs. But on Saturday, in
the first game of the doubleheader,
it was a very close game up until
the sixth when the visitors scored
four runs.
Leadoff batter Bill Glover and
then Dickey walked and then Glo-
ver stole both second and third and
bickey took second. A fielders'
choice which put Rick Boon on and
a. Ron Elliott fly out to left field
made it 2-0 atthe tot) of the first.
But Arva came -back and tied Vic
score on two hits and a walk off of
starter Dave Atthill.
in his last appearance -in London,
Attliill struggled :but against Arva
he went a strong five:innings, giv-
ing -up just five -hits while striking
out four.
.Exeter -added another run in the
• third-asBlliott walked, «tole second
and scored on Darcy Martin's base
hit with what proved to be the win-
ning:run.
Eaeeter -1ar-A-rts 0
Boon got the shutout win _as he
-gave up just two hits in this game
which was called after five innings.
Offensively, .Glover and Scot
Russell each .had three hits while
Kerry Redden belted a second in-
•ning triple.
In the fourth, the visitors sent 12
batters to the plate and scored eight
runs.
Notes:..:Fhe Express hosted
Lakeside last night and will -prob-
ably play their makeup doublehead-
er with Tillsonburg on August 1 .at
home...Glover, usually a shortstop,
is showing some versatility as he
has caught a couple of recent
games.

EXETER - The presillant of the
Exeter Centennials *Minor Soccer
Association is proud of the fact that
nearly half ofahe club's 265 players
are female.
Henry Farwell says Exeter is the
only soccer community in this area
which has enough female players
to make up teams past the mosqui-
to (1 1-12 years -old) age.
"Both our girls under -15 and our
girls under -17 teams have to play
in other leagues," said Farwell.
Those two teams, coached by Ju -
iia Merner and Heather Rideout re-
spectively, play in much larger
communities such as London, Sar-
nia, St. Thomas and even Windsor.
"We arc very fortunate, we have
good coaches and the girls like
having something that keeps them
fit."
Farwell credits a strong school
program for keeping girls interest-
ed in soccer.
"I thank our phys-ed in the
schools, they all have soccer
teams."
Her daughter, 15 year-old Kate,
coaches tyke and is the first female
soccer referee in Exeter. Hopefully,
there will be more in .the .near fu-
ture.
