WOW program
gives students
hands on experience
EXETER - For the sixth consecu-
tive year, the summer student em-
ployment program Work Orientation
Workshop (W.O.W) is being held
at the South Huron District High
School for students between the
ages of 14 and 17.
The two phase program, fully
funded by the federal govemment,
has proven successful in iiraiig
summer employment for studentsdn
a work environment relatodcto+their
career inser+ests.
"W.O.W .helps students define
their goals and aspirations through
it's two components," says Lori
Lynn Wagner. Each participant is
on the job for 20. days at a local
business or organization while
workshop experience compliments
their v.crk experience.
"The workshops are really impor-
tant because it teaches the skills that
go along with the job," says Wag-
ner. One such workshop, about
resume writing, taught students to
prepare impressive resumes to be
able to better recognizetheir skills.
Most participants agreed that part
of the reason they joined the pro-
gram was because of the difficulty
in finding student employment.
Said Michelle Parkinson, "this gives
sus a chance -to see what it's like to
get up in the morning and go to
•work, and 3t% a lot of iesponsibili-
tli."
