Sour cream makes it Russian; 1e:ewn and cinnamon make it Greek. Soy sauce makes it Chinese; garlic makes it good." - Alice Mary Brock in tier . Alice's Restaurant Cookbook Garlic is a plant which is grown for its pungent bulb, a very close kin to onions, scallions and leeks. It iwvery easy to grow, „•, simply dig a•trtench 3-4 inches deep in your garden, anti plant the cloyes, blunt end down about five inches apart. There is usually some discussion as to whether or not garlic should be planted in the spring or fall, but I think that the garlic I planted last fall is better than that which I planted this spring. If the plants produce flower heads, be sure to snip them off, or the bulbs will not be as good. One tip to remember, do not grow garlic near peas or beans as these plants do not do well if planted near garlic. For centuries, garlic has been held in high regard. It has been believed to ward off witches, cum baldness and backaches, soothe dog bites and scorpion stings, relieve symptoms of hay fever and the common cold and make a sure-fire aphrodisiac. As far back as 1500 B.C., the Egypuans were feeding garlic to their slaves to keep up their strength. In ancient India, it was used to treat heart disease. The Greeks, fathers of our present medicines; recommended garlic for many things, including tu- mors. It has -always been .important to fdlkmedicines. It is anef- fective antibiotic, but onlyif you eatit raw, cooking not only makes garlic milder tothe'tttate, ibut also diminishes it santibiotic properties. It can also worklike commercial decongestants, help- ing to clear the lungs and sinuses. Normal garlic while it is still covered with its paper -like coat- ing.is very:niild.1lis aroma is set loose as it is exposed to the air lfinnugh crushing, slicing or dicing. :Garlic should be stored in a cool•dryplace, and when youare cboosifgtitin'the store, select -a bud°whiah:is hard with a'white pyekin. Mark _Coulthard "WHAT IS LEAF SPOT?" If your lawn is being watered and fertilized but still seems yellowish. this yellowing could be due to Leaf Spot disease. This disease is a fungus that attacks the blades of grass Leaf spots are small circles with yellow centres and dark borders. These spots are dotted along the leaf blades This disease can be a problem - when the weather is cool and moist. Leat Spots occur most often in lawns that are mowed quite short A fungicide application is usually not necessary on a home lawn. Most modern bluegrass lawns are resistant to this disease If your lawn is affected. increase your mowing height, water deeply and less frequently. -Apply your fall fertilizer a little earlier in the fall and apply your spirng fer- tilizer a littler later in the spring. An additional light application of fertilizer can help to stimulate the IaWn to heal faster. Most lawns grow out of this problem as the days get hotter. Next Week: What is Quack Grass?
