Winning fish brings two prizes
By Fred Groves
• T -A staff
GRAND BEND - Sarnia's Reid
Robertson came back with a catch
of 27.379 pounds on the opening
weekend to win this year's Grand
Bend Salmon and Trout Derby and
throughout the rest of the derby, no
one could knock him from the top
spOL
Robertson's winning fish was the
biggest salmon caught at the fifth
annual event.
Robertson's winning catch was
the same fish he used to help him
win the Bluewater Sarnia Salmon
Derby's first prize of a boat, motor
and trailer.
The last day of the Sarnia derby
was the first of the Grand Bend
event and Robertson held a ticket
for each.
There was nothing in the rules
saying he could use the same fish
which netted him a $4,000 prize
from the Grand Bend derby.
Second spot went to Linda Wil-
son of Petrolia with a catch of
22.792 pounds while Dave Camp-
bell of Samia had a 21.865 pound
salmon for third.
The top local angler was Scou
McLellan of R.R. #3 Exeter who
finished 14th overall in the salmon
division with a catch of 19.184
pounds.
Keith Cameron of Wyoming had
the biggest trout at 8.78 pounds.
While R. Dolbear and Bob Loose -
more, also of Wyoming, were sec-
ond and third with catches of 7.552
and 7.16 pounds which were con-
sidered smaller trout caught then in
past years.
There were over 700 fish caught
by the nearly 850 registered anglers
during the nine day derby which
concluded Sunday afternoon as the
weigh station closed at 4 p.m.
About an hour before the derby
officially came to an end, Don
Harmsworth, Sr. of Samia brought
in a couple of good sized salmon
which may be good for eating but
were well back of the leaders.
He didn't seem to mind since he
has done very well in past Grand
Bend derbys. Harmsworth was first
in 1991 and the year before he was
second.
Last year his son. Don, Jr. was
second while dad was 12th. What's
his secret?
"I would like to be able to brag
and say it's knowledge but it's be-
ing at the right place at the right
time," said Harmsworth.
During the derby he left the dock
at Pt. Frank's no later than 5:30
a.m. and fished as deep as 90 -feet.
Johnston, Gilfillan, Miners
qualify for regional meet
TILLSONBURG - Three South Huron District High School athletes,
two in javelin, will be heading to the Ontario Federation of Schools Ath-
letic Association West Regional track and field meet later this week.
At the Western Ontario meet, held last Tuesday and Wednesday in Till-
sonburg, local athletes picked up a pair of seconds and a fifth place finish
to qualify for the regionals which will be held Friday and Saturday in
Windsor.
In the midget boys 200 meter sprint, Chad Gilfillan finished fifth with a
time of 23.9 seconds. This was a close race as the winner, St. Joe's Darryl
Olczak, clocked a 23.1. Gilfillan's time was a lot quicker than his 25.2 at
Huron -Perth where he was third.
Also in the midget age group, Danielle Miners, who set a Huron -Perth
meet record recently in the girls group, was second at WOSSA with a toss
of 35.83 meters.
This was a very close event as Dorchester's Mandy Beck was first with a
thtow of 36.00 meters. Miners improved on her H -P distance of 33.10.
In senior boys javelin, Randy Johnston will join Gilfillan and Miners in
Windsor as he finished second with a throw of 57.70 meters which was
well back of Lauriers Derek McMillan who won the event at 64.58 me-
ters.

At home on Tueday, a bases

the bottom of the first inning pro-
vided all the offence needed in a
13-3 victory over Atwood.
Gavin Snell, Greg Dalrymple and
Steve Sire each socred twice as
pitcher Steve Cook went the dis-

On Wednesday Hines once again
had the big bat with a bases loaded
triple as the Royals scored five
runs in the first frame on their way
to a 6-3 win over Belgrave.
Greg Dalrymple pitched four in-
nings to pick,up the win, giving up
two runs, four his while striking

"WHAT IS A PROPER MOWING HEIGHT?"
The appearance and health of your lawn is n aintained by mow-
ing your lawn at the proper height. A common, very serious error
is to mow lawns too short!
A lawn should always be mowed at least 5 to 6 cm (2 to 2 1/2
inches) above the ground. Mowing height should be increased
during the heat of summer. Grasses require the longer cut to
survive the summer heat and drought.
The.lawn should be mowed frequently so that only a small clip
ping I taken from the grass plant. Never remove more than 1/3
of the total grass blade when mowing.
Mower blades should be kept razor sharp. This sharp cut will
make a clean wound that will heal quickly, look tidy and resist
disease attack. It may be necessary to have mower blades
sharpened 3 times yearly.

The biggest salmon he reeled in
this year was 17 pounds.
"There's more fish out there than
I can remember," said the veteran
angler. "Conditions just happen to
be right"
As for fishing down to 90 feet, he
,said you had to go where the f 3h
were and use any strategy you
could.
"That's seems to be where most
of the salmon were coming from.
As one guy said, we were fishing
in May but using August tactics."
Harmsworth was pleased with
the number of fish caught at this
year's Grand Bend derby and said it
was a little higher number than
usual.
He said in Samia at that big der-
by, there were about 2,000 fish
caught but that was over two full
weeks and there were over 2,500
anglers.
