LUCAN - When you're beaten out in the playoffs, it's always a bit.of
gratification to know you bow out to the eventual champions.
That was the case Tuesday night as the Lucan Irish of the Ontario Junior
Development League held it's annual awards banquet and said goodbye to
the 1992-93 season.
"If you can't have it yourself, it's not a bad way to go," said Lucan presi-
dent Clare Stanley on losing to the Mitchell Hawks who swept Thames -
ford Trojans in four straight games after eliminating the Irish.
This year the Irish failed to win the west division final after making ap-
pearances in the past four OHA championship series.
At the banquet, Greg DePrest was the big award winner as the veteran
centre carted home both the team's Most Valuable Player honors and the
top scorer award.
"I understand he broke the all-time Irish record," said coach Ken Need-
ham of DePrest who has won the scoring trophy twice before and this year
led all Junior 'D' scorers with over 100 points in 40 games.
The Most Improved Player went to rookie Jim Stanton who played very
well in the post -season while the Top Defenseman Award was shared by
Ed VanKerkoerle and this year's overager, Kevin Leitch.
Rookiebf-the-Year was winger Steve.Moore while the award for Effort,
Heart and Speemaim Aike AbilitrwasitatiettbylatiCarteleLeathiald Derek
Greenlee.
The Irish have four players who graduate, captain Andy Ross, Steve
Snider, Sean Kaczmarek and McLeod. Id the OHA Development League
each team is allowed two overagers so a couple of them could be back in
the fall.
Good camp: Irish rookie goalie Eoin McInerney was one of three Jun-
ior 'D' goalies at the recent OHA Evaluation Camp. The others were Kirk
Durand who was with the Exeter Hawks this season and is from Zurich
along with Parkhill's Andy Glavin, a Stephen Township Minor Hockey
product.
In all there were nine Junior 'D' players at the camp including Zurich's
Chad Ramer who played in Parkhill this past year and Aaron Brooks also
with Parkhill.
Imperials bounce back, but still beaten

EXETER- Despite slipping, be-
hind 4-0 in the first inning, the Ex-
eter Chrysler Imperials battled back
but came up short 4-3 to visiting
Milverton Magnums Thursday
night.
The loss saw the Imperials drop
their South Perth Men's Fastball
League record to 1-2. Monday
night they tried to pulled to .500 as
they travelled to Sebringville to
take on the Juniors.
In the first inning, the Magnums
got to Exeter pitcher Jeremy Mason
for four hits, plus three Imperials'
errors resulted in a big lead for the
visitors.
But Mason settled down and
through the seven -inning game
struck out seven and walked four
while allowing eight hits. Exeter
did not allow a Milverton runner
past second base after the second
inning.
"They had a couple of halls hard
off him but once he got his stride.
he threw well," said Imperials'
coach Fred Cook. "Milverton was
impressed with him."
Mason had a good rise ball which
seemed to dip away from the batter
at the last moment.
In the first inning, the Imperials
booted the ball around and twice
the ball was hit to the outfield
where both Kevin Lightfoot and
Bob Comish seem to lose the ball
in the grass.
Last year the South Huron Recre-
ation Centre planted new grass in
the field but there are still some
rough spots.
"It's going to take a while for the
grass to take," said Cook.

nings made the difference as Exeter
had a little help in the nine walks
given up by Crediton pitcher
Becky Morgan.
Although Crediton veteran Deb
Lord had a triple and a pair of dou-
bles, she only scored once, in the
Classics best inning, a three -run
rally ill the fifth.
Brenda Wilds was safe on a bunt
single and then Lord clubbed a
double followed by Angie Gould's
home run.
The two teams will meet four
times this year, the next meeting
comes on June 1 in Exeter. There
are only four teams in the league
this year, the others are Sebring-
ville and St. Pauls.
Somewhat an unusual occurrence
in Monday's game as a Crediton
player had three balls and two
strikes on her and following the
next pitch, another ball, the umpire
did not award a walk, waited for
the next pitch, a strike and called
her out.

the third inning when Mason re-
ceived a walk from Darwin Erb,
moved to second on a passed ball
and scored on Lightfoot's two -out
single.
Lightfoot pulled the hosts to
within a couple of runs when he
crossed the plate after second base-
man Rod Johnston singled.
It was 4-3 after five as Lightfoot
came up with his second hit of the
night, moved to second on a passed
ball and scored on Dan Heywood's
hit.
Exeter faced it's first questionable
play of the year on Thursday in the
bottom of the sixth inning.
Third baseman Kevin Windsor,
who has been hitting the ball hard
since the opening game, tripled to
lead off the inning but, when trying
to score on a Milverton miscue,
was called out at the plate.
Milverton catcher Gary Jacobs
blocked the plate to prevent Wind-
sor from scoring, but according to
Cook, Jacobs never had the ball.
"Catchers block the plate all the
time without the ball. If the bell':
on the way, the umpires won't call
it," said Cook of possible interfer-
ence. "He (Jacobs) never caught the
ball when he got it."
There was an argument et the
plate but the umpire did not change
his mind despite the pleas of sever-
al Exeter players as will as Cook.
Windsor, obviously upset by the
call, went out to his fielding posi-
tion in the top of the seventh and
made a great play on an attempted
bunt by Erb.
The ball was tapped back to
Windsor who grabbed it, turnec
and fired to Heywood who wre
covering second and then he threw
it to Lighfoot at first for the Imperi-
als' second double play of the
game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ex-
eter came very close to winning the
game as Mason drew his second
walk and with two out, Mike Des-
jardine connected with a blast to
left field which was caught right
against the fence.
