Fog doesn't hamper anglers at opening day
GRAND -BEND - Some veteran
rnglers showed up at the Grand
Bend Salmon and Trout Deity 'on
the first day and caught what could
be some of the biggest fish of the
5th annual event.
Saturday morning, Sue and Drew
Leckie of Forest and Linda and Jim
Wilson of Petrous set out in the
fog and later in the afternoon, were
weighing in Sue's nearly 15 -pound
King Salmon.
The opening day of the nine -day
derby saw a very foggy Lake Hu-
ron which did not co-operate until
well past noon.

"Last year there were 23 and 24 -

20 -pounders caught today," she
said of Saturday's efforts.
While the weather meant anglers
had to be somewhat cautious on
Saturday, it didn't stop them from
going out and trying to win the
54,000 first place prize for the
biggest salmon or the 81,000 purse
for the biggest trout.
"If you go slow and watch what
you're doing, it's okay and every-
one is pretty cautious," said Lackie
of the weather.
This year's derby had to be post-
poned a week from its scheduled
May 8 start because of the condi-
tions on Lake Huron.
"Sarnia delayed there's a week
because of the ice," said volunteer
Jo -Ann MacEachern who helped
weigh the fish on Saturday.
"There's fish this year, last year
there was hardly any."
The derby continues until Sunday
and there are many prizes up for
grabs including the bonus prize
which gives all entrants a chance to
win a new outboard motor.
