DeBruyn nets two in Fury's firstvictory
EXETER - It sure didn't take the
Fury long to win their first soccer
game.
Exeter's newest senior team
edged visiting Delhi Royals 2-1
Sunday afternoon at the Canner's
Field to pick up their first Western
Ontario Soccer League second di-
vision west win after just two
starts.
Late in the first half, Henri De-
Bruyn scored on a free kick and it
was nearly 2-0 but the Delhi goalie
came up with a save a few mo-
ments later.
"We had our chances but they
were coming on," said Fury coach
Soccer roundup
Martin DeBruyn. "They (Delhi)
won their fust game 3-0."
The score remained a 1-0 lead for
the hosts until there was about 15
minutes left in. the game when Del-
hi scored on a comer kick which
some how got past a blocked Exet-
er goalie Tim McAllister.
But with about five minutes left,
Henri DeBruyn got his second to
give the Fury their first ever win.
The entire game saw a lot of
bumping and Martin DeBruyn said

RE -ALIGNMENT AND PLAY-OFF FORMAT
Well, Commissioner GARY BE1TMAN has made his first ma-
jor move in the NHL and I must admit that he did a pretty good job.
I know some of the purists in the league are not too happy with the
changing of the conference and division names because of the great
names of CAMPBELL, NORRIS, SMYTHE, PATRICK and the
BOSTON .BRUIN owner Mr. Adams are going to be gone. But I
have to admit that sometimes I even got confused on who was in the
CAMPBELL CONFERENCE and the PRINCE OF WALES
CONFERENCE and what teams were in what division. I know it's
a Basketball theory with the NORTH-EAST and WEST etc., but
you can readily know what teams are in what division.
Gary's not going to win them all. TORONTO got a little upset
because they wanted to be .in the ADAMS (excuse me, the North-
East) Division. They wanted to play MONTREAL because of the
great rive that dates back -to the 30s. Cline to think of it, how
does TORONTO fit into the WESTERN confexence when PITTS-
BURGH is further west than TORONTO, and the PENS are in the'
EASTERN CONFERENCE? Strange isn't it? ME THINKS that'
CLIFF FLETCHER gave a little too easy on this one. I feel a
promise, (maybe that's too strong a word) lets say hint that if
HARTFORD folds their tent and goes to MILWAUKEE, the
LEAFS will be in the ADAMS... I mean the North-East. (Sorry, old I
habits are hard to break).
Let's face it, G.B. couldn't satisfy everybody, but he came close.
Commissioner G.B. came up with another idea that I like. To
make a long story short, in each conference, 8 teams will make the
playoffs. The 2 division champs will automatically be placed 1 andj
2 and the next 6 teams will be ranked by points. Then in the 1st
round, the 2.division champs will play the 7th and 8th placed teams
and the team with the next highest point totals will be 3rd and they
,'ill play •the team with the 6tJ1 highest went; t,Wol. • Tiitr t&th place
team will play the 5thptace team. Got it?
This is the way it should be. Remember the year that the LEAFS
made the playoffs with 57 points in the Norris while that teams with
70 points in the Patrick Division missed the playoffs? Now it has
gone back to the old system, like it was when I coached with one
notible difference When I coached was, 1 play 16, 2 played 15 and
so on. That was even better. Last year the NEW YORK RANG-
ERS got the biggest shaft of all. They worked hard all last year to
finish first ,overall in the NHL and what was their reward? Not
much! They put out, every game all year and in the 1st round of
playoffs, instead of facing the weakest team, they met the tough
NEW JERSEY DEVILS and go through a seven game war. They
just got by the fust round and who's waiting for them; the STAN-
LEY CUP CHAMPION PITTSBURGH PENQUINS. They had
another war with MARIO and the boys and they're gone after the
second round. So much for hard work
in the old playoff format.
I know that there will be complaints
about the realignment. DETROIT and
TORONTO are the only two teams
who are in the eastern time zone. I
even got confused on who was in the
CAMPBELL CONFERENCE and
the PRINCE OF WALES CONFER-
ENCE and what teams were in what
division. I know it's a Basketball theory
with the NORTH-EAST and WEST etc., but you can readily know
what teams are in what division.

"We're a little young and were
getting knocked around. They're
(Delhi) a little more physical."
It is early in the season and he

as far as conditioning is concerned.

Panthers in playoffs
WOODSTOCK - Despite having more scoring chances and good control
the South Huron District High School Panthers senior boys soccer team
were beaten in the semi-finals of a tournament here on Saturday.
The Panthers were beaten by Arthur Voaden after beating London Cen-
tral 1-0 on Sergio Camana-Para's goal and 1-0 over College Avenue on Ja=
mie Dougall's goal.
Darryl Chappel had both shutouts in the South Huron net and was only
beaten once in a 1-0 loss to Burford.
On Thursday, the juniors wrapped up their undefeated regular season
with their sixth straight win, a big 3-0 shutout over Goderich in which
Marty DeBruyn scored all three goals.
The seniors went into their final regular game undefeated but lost a close
2-1 decision to Goderich as Gavin Snell scored for the Panthers.
In playoff action, the juniors were to host Goderich in the semis yester-
day while the seniors hosted Seaforth. Both the girls teams have also qual-
ified for the playoffs.

last year in both the 200 m and the

peting in the 400 m.
Also in junior girls, Stacey Thur-
man grabbed another year's trip to
WOSSA as she was second in jave-
lin at 26.80 and fifth in discus at
28.04.
While Johnson has qualified in
senior boys for three events, he'll
be joined by Dan Vanderlaan who
was fifth in the very tough 2,000 m
steeplechase with a time of 7:37.5.
Robertson is the lone senior girl

Generals get awards
GRAND BEND - The Exeter
RSD Midget Generals wrapped up
their season with a barbecue and
awards day Sunday at coach Scett
Bogart's residence.
Mark Brintnell was selected by
the !roaches as the winner of the
Most Valuable Player award for
both his leadership in the dressing
room and hard work on the ice.
Steve Farquhar received the
"Three Star Award" for being the
most consistent player leading the
team in points throughout the sea-
son.
Derek Beckett was named most
improved player; Ian Jean most
sportsmanlike and Derek Campbell
was the MVP for the playoff sea-
son.
Missing several starters, includ-
ing Charlie Wise, Peter Hakvoort
and Shawn Rotteau, Exeter, play-
ing with no subs, tried to hang on
for the tie.
"It was a comer kick and it was a
bit of a scramble," described Cen-
tennials' coach Dick Lord of the
winning goal. "It didn't even go to
the back of the net."
The game was a very long one
for both teams as they played sev-
eral minutes past the regulation 45
minutes in both halfs. Naim's win-
ning goal might have come past of-
ficial time.
"It appeared as though the fust
half ran about 50 minutes and we
felt it was the same in the second,"
said Lord.
Still looking for their fust victo-
ry, the Centennials will,hostApollo
on Sunday at !3 dg,;at Apt t 's
Field.
