High School proves fun of science
By Adrian Harte, T -A Editor
EXETER - About 800 elementary students
were treated to a home-grown science centre on
Thursday as South Huron District High School
opened its doors on Science West, a one day ex-
position of the world of science. -
George McEwan, one of the teachers who or-
ganized the event, said the high school students
displays were part of their independent study re-
quirements, but many students voluntarily be-
came involved in the project.
The emphasis of the show was on visual inter-
est, hands on learning, and an overall aim to
make scientific concepts understandable to the
visiting students from grades 4-8.
"It's a teaching project more than anything
else," said McEwan, while in the next room a
class of sitalapas were learning how to use chem-
istry to c e ieir own "slime" mixtures.
Other-tlays featured laser beams, glow in
the dark materials, static electricity, environmen-
tal science, solar power, and even superconduc-
tors. In all cases, the visitors could either watch
a demonstration of the principles at work, or
take part in their application.
"It introduces all these scientific concepts to
these kids," said McEwan, but added it could not
fully replace a field trip to the Toronto Science
Centre.
The name for the show, Science West, is de-
rived from Sudbury's science centre, Science
North.
McEwen says not only was the day clearly a
success from the science department's point of
view, but that he would like to see the concept
expanded In future years. He says he can see
students from other school departments, geogra-
phy in particular, being able to add exhibits to
the show.
But perhaps the most important message of
the day was the idea that high school science
isn't something to be dreaded, or that careers in
science and technology are worth a second look.
"This may stir a few kids into thinking science
is something worth signing up for," said McE-
wan,
At right, a hovercraft, built with two vacuum cleaner motors,
provided rides for dozens of Science West visitors on Thurs-
day. Here Liz Groot gets a try at it, helped by Fred Godbolt at
left. At top, Science West filled the entire large gymnasium,
the stage, and several classrooms with science exhibits of
every kind on Thursday. Above, solar energy was the subject
of Chris Grimminck's (right) booth at the fair. Here he de-
scribes how he converted a toy car to recharge itself with
light.
