LONDON - Daphne Damen of
RR3 Lucan was presented with a
McTavish Award last Wednes-

Education Centre in London.
Damen, a student of the John
Paul II high school in London,
was one of 17 recipients of the
awards one from each of Lon-
don's secondary schools.
Damen's mother Carol explains
that her daughter was nominated
by her OAC' [Ontario Academic
Credit] English teacher for her
thigh marks in English, despite
her dyslexia, her extra -curricular
activities and community ser-
vice.
The McTavish award is pre-
sented to those students who best
attain the maximum develop-
ment of their whole person - that
. is the physical, mental, emotion-
al, social and moral sides of the
individual's behavior."
The award is in memory of Er-
nie McTavish, a former principal
and superintendent of the Lon-
don Board of Education who
died in 1973.
"We were very proud of her,"
said Carol Damen. "She's
worked very ltard and it hasn't
Daphne Damen
come easy."
In addition to a long list of
school activities, Damen is a 4-
1-1 Club member, a Kirkton
Ranger, and teaches gymnastics
Saturday mornings at the South
Huron Recreation Centre.
"She was very excited. It's an
honour just to be nominated,"
said Carol.
The quality of the 17 award
winners was judged to be so
high this year, that Marion
McTavish decided the $2,000
scholarship should be foregone
this year in favour of giving
each student $100.
