. CREDITON - Hard work has paid off for Judd
Desjardine who will be participating in the Canada
Wide Science Fair held in Quebec next week.
The Grade 8 student at Stephen Central Public
School is one of three students from Huron County
competing against more than 350 students from across
Canada.
The three students, along with Wayne Stewart a
teacher and librarian at Howick Central Public School,
will be flying to Ribiere-du-Loup on Sunday.
The fust few days of the week-long competition,
Stewart said, will be busy as the students compete
for a number of medals and prizes including schol-
arships and trips.
But there will also tears and leisure activities
planned.
Desjardine's project, Which fertilizer Works Best,
was a winner at the Huron County Science Fair last
month.
He began working on it last summer although the
project wasn't due until a few months ago.
In order to collect accurate data, Desjardine said, he
had to start his project early. He used corn as a sample
'ivzie the result would be easy to measure.

The fair is sponsored by the Youth Science Founda-
tion to promote science in Canada.

HOLMESVILLE - The eighth annual Excellence in Public
Education Banquet was held in Goderich Township Hall,
liolmesville, on April 28. The Banquet was jointly sponsored
by the Huron County branch of the Ontario Secondary School
Teachers' Federation, and the Huron County Board of
Education.
The banquet honoured 38 students, teachers, support staff,
community members, trustees and administrators who have
contributed to excellence in secondary schools in Huron
County.
Harry Hayter, a Huron County Board of Education Trustee
from 1973 to 1988, was honoured for his loyalty to the
schools in Stephen Township which he represented for 15
years.
Bob Cunningham, Transportation Manager from 1971 to
1990, was honoured for his contributions. He will be
remembered for upholding board policy with dedication and
conviction and for the unblemished safety record of the
transportation system.

High School Jazz Band under the direction of Bob Robilliard.
Their love of music was obvious and their expertise is one
more example of excellence by Huron County students.
Student art work was on display as well as student poetry.
Awards of Excellence were presented to the following
people at South Huron District High School: Brian McInnes,
Lorna Miller, Stacey Rader, Troy Robinson, `Bob Robilliard
and Jean Mason.
Local winnerhonoured
KERRY MANDERS - Kerry is an OAC student dedicated
to the achievement of excellence in education. She has
maintained an A+ average for five years and in 1990 was the
•top student. She has played Badminton, Volleyball and
:Basketball all five years and was co -captain of the Basketball
team this year. She has been a member of Athletic Council
for four years, this year as one of the executive members.
Kerry, an OSAID member, has served as a Prefect for three
years. She has committed many hours of her time helping
other students as a Peer Tutor, and Guidance Support Team
member and as an assistant coach of the Midget Volleyball
Team. This year Kerry is a recipient of the Canadian
Association of Principals' Student Leadership Award. Kerry
intends to major in English and hopefully become a
University Professor. She is the daughter of Glen—and Betty
,Ann Lamport.
BRIAN MCINNES - Brian has exemplified commitment
to excellence in his studies, has maintained an A+ average
during all five years and was top student the last two years.
Brian has competed in Cross -Country and Track and played
Football for three years, the final year as co -captain. He
represented. S.H.D.H.S. with distinction in 1991 at the
Canadian Bar Association Mock Trial Competition and in
1992 at a Historical Debate in Goderich. Brian has shown a
willingness to help others by being a Peer Tutor, Guidance
Support Team Member, and co -chairperson of OSAID this
year. Recently, he has involved himself in Native Justice
issues and has begun to build a personal relationship with
members and leaders of the Native Community; Brian hopes
to complete a degree in Native Studies and then study Law.
He is the son for Staff Sergeant Don and Theresa McInnes.
LORNA MILLER - Lorna is a Grade 1
ad 1 student and
during her three years at S.H.D.H.S. has maintained an A -
average. Lorna is an active and committed peer mentor for
the school's Mentoring Program
Pro am and in her capacity
as
student coordinator has organized events, scheduled meetings
and run workshops for students and teachers. Lorna is very
active in the music program, playing in the Jazz Band,
Concert-Bandd
an singing in the Concert Choir., She, teaches:..
piano 'edd't;►tudios piano and saxophone privately. During -the
summer she has attended the National Music Camp of
' Canada. Outside of school Lorna is a Junior Leader of the
Grand Bend Brownies. She is the daughter of Glenn and
Sharon Miller.
STACEY RADER - Stacey Rader is an OAC student with
a keen interest in athletics. During all five years she has
played Volleyball and Basketball, the last two years as a
captain of both teams. Stacey has also played soccer for 3
years. She has been an Athletic Council representative and
this year is the AC Chairperson and an executive member of
the Student Council. For the last three years she has been a
coach for the Elementary School Basketball Camp. She is a
volunteer coach and official for high school sports and has
been a baseball coach in the community as well as bible
school teacher. Even with her many hours of practice, games
and coaching responsibilities, Stacey has maintained a B -
average. In the fall she hopes to pursue a career in athletics at
college. Stacey is the daughter of Dave and Nancy Rader.
