Hawks hot, handle Flyers 7-5
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
ALVINSTON - The Hawks are contenders.
Sunday afternoon in Alvinston, the Exeter Hawks
beat the"Flyers 7-5 to take over sole possession of third
place in the OHA Junior Development League west di-
vision. Heading into the game, both teams had 43
points but the. Hawks 20th win of the season gave
them the edge.
Exeter is undefeated in its last six games and since
Jan.'22 are 5-1-3.
Shayne Robinson led the winners on Sunday with a
pair of goals and two assists while Derek Shackleton
added two tallies. John O'Hara, Dave Dalrymple and
Ray Cousineau also scored for the winners. Cousineau
had two assists.
The Flyers led 2-1 at the end of the first period but it
was 6-3 for the Hawks after 40 minutes. In the middle
frame, Exeter scored two powerplay goals in a game
which saw 76 minutes in penalties.
Jlawks 7. Pests 7
Despite taking a 4-0 lead the Hawks could only man-
age a 7-7 overtime tie in Exeter Friday night.
Robinson led the way with three goals and an assist
for a big four -point night and Todd McCann netted a
pair, both in the rust period.
While the Hawks played strong defence a week ago
at the South Huron Recreation Centre, that part of their
game seemed weak on Friday against the Pests.
Goalie Brandon Ropp played well in the opening 20
minutes but the visitors came down on him pretty hard
in the next two periods. At the other end, the score
could have swayed in favor of the Hawks but Belmont
goalie Matt Wilson made some big saves in the middle
frame.
The scoring started just 1:32 into the game when de-
fenseman Larry Lewis shot from the point, Shackleton
was on the rebound and then Todd McCann finally put
it in.
A deflection by Robinson made it 2-0 on the power-
play and then McCann with a spin around move gave
the hosts a three -goal cushion with 13:06 left in the
first period.
Just 53 seconds later, Robinson showed some speed
and strength when he barreled down the right side and
slipped it past Wilson.
It only took the Pests five minutes into the second
period to score their first as Andy Beattie connected
befora_Robinson could collect his hat trick on.a goal
set up by Mark Lynn and Shack1eten.
But after that, the Hawks defence struggled as Rob
Mercer, Jamie Dence and Tim Uuebanks pulled the
visitors to within a goal.
However the Pests' Joe Mercer took a hjghsticking
penalty and on the same stoppage, Rob Mercer was
given an uhsportsmanlike penalty. That gave the
Hawks a two-man advantage for two full minutes.
Nathan Blight, moving up from his familiar blueline
position to take a few shifts on forward made it 6-4 for
the hosts. But that wasn't enough and again at the start
of a period, this time the third, Belmont pulled to with-
in a goal again as Rob Mercer. connected.
With 9:14 left in regulation time, Mark Watson
slipped it past Ropp to tie the score and eventually
send it into overtime.
In the extra period, both teams scored, Dan Ryan ,
with his 18th of the season for the, Hawks and with
only 1:44 left in the overtime, Joe Mercer tied it 7-7.
Shackleton was hurt when he was involved in a sec-
ond period pile up in front of the Belmont net. It ap-
peared as though he sprained his ankle. Good news on
the injury front, Hawks' rookie sensation Sean
McCann could be returning to the lineup sooner than
expected.
Hawks' happenings:...Both Robinson and Cousi-
neau hit the 30 -goal mark on the weekend. Robinson
leads the team in scoring with 69 points while Cousi-
neau is close behind with 66...In his five games with
the Hawks, Shackleton has 13 points...Hawks were in
Mitchell last night, host Lambeth Friday and Lucan
comes to town on Sunday...

three on Sunday.

Township blanked Goderich 4-0.
Brad Schenk, Jesse Schroeder,
Scott Davies and Roman Wilson
scored for the winners.
The next game saw Schroeder,

5-3 win over Wingham and then
beat Dorchester by a similar score.
'Against Dorchester, Hodgins had
two goals and an assist with two
from Alexander Michaels and one
