There were sixteen snowmobfle fatallties this winter
TORONTO - At least 16 people
hove lost their lives. in snowmo-
bile mishaps this winter in O nta-
no. Fourteen o • killed were
males, with al*. .1 and thin ice
playing major roles in the acci-
dents.
These stark facts should be on
the minds of every snowmobiler
heading into Snowmobile Safety
Week, February 6-13 across Cana-
da.
Two newlyweds were killed on
their honeymoon at St. Charles,
southeast of Sudbury, when the
driver left a groomed trail and
crashed head-on with a rock wall.
A 21 -year-old man was killed
when he was accidentally run over
by a snowmobile driven by his 17 -
year -old brother in Derby Town,
ship, west of Owen Sound.
A young woman lost her life in
the Huntsville area when her bare
head struck the ground after she
fell off the back of a snowmobile
during an accident. She would
probably be alive today had she
worn a helmet. Two men from
Kitchener died when their snow -
machines plunged through the ice
on Georgian Bay, near Honey
Ha Two teenaged males,
aged l8 and 19, suffered a similar
fate on Big LaCloche Lake near
Massey, Other fatal accidents oc-
curred at Albany River, Clear
Lake, Espanola, Fort Frances,
Haileybury, Matheson, Minaki
and Sprucedale. -
"1'm saddened to hear that 16
people were killed, but what
makes it more
tragic is that these
accidents were
asily preventa-
ble," Ontario
reventable,"Ontario Min-
ister of Culture,
Tourism and Rec-
reation Anne
Swarbrick said.
"It's vital that eve-
ryone, from novic-
es to regular riders
adopt a safety -first
attitude."
The latest statis-
tics are a sobering
reminder of the Ontario's Snow-
mobile Safety Committee's Ride
Safe, Ride Sober campaign. The
messages contained in the cam-
paign slogan are
very clear. 1f you
are planning to
head out on your
snowmobile, don't
drink. When you
do operate a snow-
mobile, pay atten-
tion, don't speed,
stick to groomed
trails, avoid travel-
ling on lakes if at
till possible, follow
the rules of the
trail, carry an
emergency kit and
at all times wear reflective cloth-
ing and a helmet approved by the
Canadian Standards Association
(CSA) or the Department of
Transportation. These safety tips,
if followed by everyone, would go
a long way toward reducing the
number of snowmobile accidents
dramatically.
Many people from snowmobile
clubs and communities across the
province will get together to pro-
mote safe snowmobtling at special
events during Snowmobile Safety
Week. Events will include Snow -
fest in Haliburton, February 5-7
and Yamafest, also to be held Feb-
ruary 5-7 in Sudbury.
The week will be highlighted by
the Snowmobile Safety Contest
draw February 17 at Maple Leaf
Gardens. Toronto Maple Leafs
captain Wendel Clark, a cam-
paign spokesperson, will draw the
grand prize, a Yamaha Mazer
Deluxe Snowmobile, from entries
across the province. People who
have entered have answered ques-
tions relating to snowmobile safe-
ty. Those who answer correctly
have a chance to win the grand
prize.
"I'm proud to be a member of
the Ride Safe, Ride Sober team,"
Clark said. "The messages we are
getting out to the public are clear
and straightforward. Stay sober,
follow the rules of the trail and
come home safely. If not, others
may have to carry you home, or
worse still you may never come
home again!"

Hockey team beats
visiting Goderich 6-1
EXETER - Chris McDonald scored two goals to pace the South Huron
.District High'School Panthers to a 6-1 over visiting Goderich Vikings in
'Aaron Conference high school hockey action Wednesday afternoon.
After losing their first game of the season to St. Marys, the Panthers
have gone undefeated in their last four contests, winning twice and tieing a
pair.
While South Huron led 2-0 at the end of the first period on Wednesday
on goals by Jason'Hodgson and Jason Schilbe, the Vikings pulled to with-
in a goal just one minute into the middle frame.
But at 4:05, Ben Geiger made a mice move to the net to reclaim the two -
goal cushion. McDonald's first of a pair of buck -to -back tallies Mme on a
backhander just 1:13 into the third period and then Trevor Taylor rounded
out the scoring.
Now that's a helmet!
Students from the South Huron District High School looked on
as Rick McDonald and the teachers went against the OAC stu
dents in a hockey game Friday afternoon. The students won o
close 5-4 decisionthanks to the assistance of a "ringer" goal -
tender.
