EXETER - A high scoring
centre, a smart defensive de-
fenseman and a goaltender
that can do everything but
balance the puck on his nose.
That's what makes up a
great hockey team.
But while hockey coaches
concentrate on the centre
and the defenseman, often
the goaltender is forgotten.
It's not the fault of the coach,
but being the guy or girl who
keeps the puck out of the net,
is very important. ,
Few coaches were goal -
tenders, just look at the Na-
tional Hockey League for
proof.
That's why they are having
goalie clinics like the one at
the South Huron Recreation
Cott re•Fririiply:eight in Ex t-
er. Hosted by the Exeter Mi-
nor Hockey Association,
more than a dozen young
goalies flopped to the ice,
skated up and down the rink
and learned the finer points
of stopping the hard rubber
disc.
Being a goaltender means
you are on your feet the en-
tire game while your team-
mates go to the bench, catch
their breath and -get a few
pointers from the coach:
The goalie is usually the
first guy the fans blame when
the home team is losing, but
most of the time it's not the
goalie's fault.
Cat -like quickness, puck-
handling skills ar good as
the rest of the players on the
team and the ability to get up
and down dozens of times in
a me , , this is the life of a
e.

Oh, the Super Bowl, how I love it.
Who wins the game is unimportant I thought a half hour be-
fore game time, it's the party that goes with it. Mike Ditka,
the great ex -coach of the Chicago Bears predicted Dallas, I
had to agree, after all they came into the game with the best
defense.
I turned on the TV at 5:20, about 40 minutes before game
time and through that, I had to listen to some mindless trivia
but I didn't care because hype Is what the game is all about.
But it's more than a game, it's a ritual. It's a day when peo-
ple, including myself, see how much we can eat and drink -in
a span of a few hours, kind of like Christmas but without the
presents.
When Buffalo's Steve Tasker blocked the punt and the Bills'
Thurman Thomas went in five minutes into the game, for a
split second I thought it was going to be an upset.
But the Cowboys defense came up big and when Jimmy
Jones reached out his big hands and took away a Jim Kelly at-
tempted pass I felt a little bit of breath come back to Dallas.
Things got quiet for just a couple of seconds so I made my
way over to the couch. One of my cats settled in nicely with
me but he certainly took a quick exit when the Cowboys
scored their third.touchdown.
Five tumovers was the big difference in the drat half as the
Cowboys built a 28-10 lead. Dallas' defense, the best in the
land was reigning supreme.
With 19 seconds left in the first half, Cowboys coach Jim-
my Johnston decided to take a time out and see if he could get
another touchdown and go into the locker mom with a big
lead.
He wasn't being greedy but no doubt he was thinking of the
Bills' big playoff comeback against Houston.
Just before the half, it was reported that Johnston was
proudly wearing the ring he won when he guided the Miami
Hurricanes to the national university title in 1987. Wait Jim-
my, the biggy is coming I thought.
Oh halftime - balloons, flowers, ribbons, bands, whistles all
that and Michael Jackson. Why not, who said this had to be
all football?
Beat it Michael, because I still like a lot of football talk dur-
ing halftime and less singing and dancing, heh, this is football
nota Night Club.
While Michael stood there, and stood there and stood there,
I ran up and got another refreshment and the Bills and Cow-
boys got to relax a little longer than usual.
Michael, why are you grabbing yourself, it's 8:05 p.m. let's
get -on with the game. All the kids run up by the stage .and
watch him, this isn't football....

Super Bowl, Kelly was hurt and I:14 our sait_on the wound
even a little more, James Lofton dropped a pass late in the
game which would have been his first catch of the game.
The youngest team, a defense that had none of their defen-
sive players named to the Pro Bowl, this just could be a dy-
nasty in the making.
From the sidelines: Saturday night I saw some great hock-
ey in Exeter, the atoms, bantams and peewees sure provided
me and everyone else in the building with some great mo-
ments. Good Luck in the playoffs boys...Speaking of hockey,
how about that big trade which sent Paul Coffey to Detroit
and. saw Jimmy Carson head to Los Angeles. I think Detroit
got the better of the deal in the long run because Coffey will
be the guy who sends a lot of passes up the middle...NHL
All-Star game this weekend should be a good one...Just a re-
