Zurich skaters doing well
in nal competitio

ZURICH - The Bich .and urea
Figure Skating Club has been busy
these past few months at their les-
sons on 'both Tuesdays and Satur-
days.
President Sheila Miller of Dash-
wood reports that 11 members of
the club took part in the HOME
(Huron Oxford Middlesex Elgin)
Competition in Port Stanley last
weekend. All skaters did well in
"their own categories.
Sixteen Zurich skaters will also
be taking part in the annual Glen-
coe Sweet Heart Competition on
Valentines Day.
The club is busy geeing ready for
their big event of the year - the an-
nual

skating carnival which will be
held at the arena on Sunday March

The Zurich Optimist Club will be
sponsoring another ,chaperoned
teen dance this Friday at tate Com-
munity Centre from 7-10 pin. for
ages 11.15. Music will be provid-
ed by Hook's Party Sound and ad
mission is $3 at the door.
Line Dancistg
All local seniors are invited to
drop in .at the Hay Township Hall
in Zurich on Monday afternoons in
February at 1 p.m. for line dancing
exercise, followed by a few games
of cards and socializing.

February '2, 1983 - Exeter Public Utilities Commission
manager Hugh Davis was honoured for completion of 25
years in that position.
The 30th anniversary of South Huron Hospital will be
celebrated Thursday night of this week and first board
chairman Elmer Bell will be present to set the lights aglow
on a very unusual cake.
Bobby Hull, the Golden JetriiMaid-ey will be the head-
line speaker at next Tuesntlu''s sanmual Exeter Lions
Sportsmen's Dinner. .
Agile 45th anniversary of the Exeter Lions Club Thurs-
day night, Bob Dinney receivetf a 35 year service pin from
Deputy District Governor John Stephens.
Representatives of four major fund raising organizations
met last week in an effort to avoid any overlapping in
their campaigns. The groups were the March of Dimes,
Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Cancer Society and the
South Huron Association for the Mentally Handicapped.

February 1, 1968 -The South Huron Association for the
Mentally Retarded formed at a meeting in Exeter Thurs-
day got off to an almost unbelievable start. About 150 per -
;sins attended and Ron Heimrich.was named president.
"That's it for sugar beets in Western Ontario". That was
the comment of Lloyd Lovell of Exeter after he learned
that the Canada and Dominion Sugar Company had de-
cided to close down its plant in Chatham. Lovell is a vice-
president of the Ontario Sugar Beet Growers Marketing
Board.
Percy Noels of Stephen township received a Centennial
medal for his untiring efforts in heading up the Stephen
Centennial committee.
An outbreak of red measles hit Exeter Public School this
week and principal Arthur Idle said some days, more ••an
50 percent of the students in grades one, two and e
were missing.
The Huron County TB Association reports that the
lighted cigarette between the lips of six million Canadians
represents in the opinion of many doctors the greatest
health problem in the country today.

February 4, 1943 - Through Huron county council's re-
forestration program, Exeter residents will be.able to se-
cure shade trees for their properties.
J.M. Southoott has been named chairman of the Exeter
Arena committee . Receipts for the year 1942 were
$2,441.68 resulting in a net profit of $129.07.
The sun was out Tuesday morning and if the ground hog
can burrow through the deep snow we should be in for six
more weeks of winter.
At the annual meting of the Crediton Red Cross com-
mittee, sewing convener Mrs. Wilfred ,Mack reported 158
articles made. Mrs. Mose Feist said 101 quilts were put to-
gether- and 372 knitted articles including 76 pairs of socks
were made available for the armed forces.
A three -act play, "Mystery at Midnight" will be present-
ed Friday at the Fairfield School with proceeds going to
the Russian Relief Fund. Admission is 25 and 15 cents.
"This office closed for the duration of the war" sign was
tacked on 90 dental offices in Western Ontario this week.

100 Years Ago
February 2, 1893 - Another boot and shoe store has
been established in town with Mr. T.E. McDonagah as
proprietor. He has opened out a large stock belonging to
the trade in Jackson's Black and no doubt will command a
large share of the patronage.
A large part of the smoke stack at the Clinton Organ
Factory was blown down Saturday last. Quite an exciting
time was experienced in rig it.
Messrs. Coursey Bros. of Uatan have entered their cele-
brated Clydesdale stallion Mr. Joe Anderson in the World
Fair competition in Chicago.
One day last week when Mr. Thomas Cameron of the
Thames Read in Usborne,township butchered a cow he
found unusual items in its stomach. They included a three-
inch nail, a nail more than two inches long and two shingle
tails. How the nails got there is a mystery, as the cow did
not show syn ptotns of anything being wrong.

Quilting
Women from several Zurich
churches are busy quilting this
week at St. Peter's Parish Fellow-
ship Hall. They are working on
two quilts as an ecumenical com-
munity project.
Volleyball
The Monday Night Volleyball
League will be having a tourna-
ment this Saturday. There will be
14 teams in all. Those from the Zu-
rich area will be joined by one team
from London and another from
Parkhill. The games will run from
8 a.m. to about midnight on courts
at both the arena and St. Boniface
School. Spectators are welcome.
Another volleyball tournament' is
being planned for February 20 at
the same locations. Twenty teams
are expected.
Dog tags
The 1993 Zurich dog tags will
soon be due. If anyone has a new
dog not on the list, they can call
Carmel Sweeney at 236-4702.

have returned home from a month's
