Friday night, the veteran net - minder turned away 25 shots to help the hosts beat the Belmont Pests 6-2. The win lifts the Hawks' west division record to 13 0-1. It took Exeter just 1:49 into the game to get on the scoreboard when forward Andrew Barton caught Belmont goalie Matt Wil- son out of l Gillen. Paul Manders and Aft enee tae Auvin Tate drew them the lust goal. The Heats banged and bumped theirtheir soppoients all night and it be- gan when `blueliner Jamie Cornish dished out a hard hit to Mike Smith right in front of the Exeter bench. It was 2-0 when Scan McCann stayed with a loose puck as line - mate Shayne Robinson and Dave Dalrymple helped out on McCann's 32nd goal of the season. Wilson came up big on Irvine and Dalrymple late in the opening period but the Hawks were up by a Goan ' gets three assists BELMON T - If records are kept Lin the OHA Junior Development .League, one of them may just have -.to be rewritten. .Sunday afternoon in Belmont, Lucan Irish goalie Brent Lewis, who was the starting goalie for the west team in Saturday's All-star game, had three assists in a 7-4 win against the Pests. In Lucan's 22hd win -of the sea- son, Paul O'Shea and Greg DePrest each had a pair of goals with sin- gles from Sean Kaczmarek, Jason Wilson and Kevin Leitch. Jason Glasser, Ed VanKerkoerle and Chris Chater all had two assists each for the winners. Leitch showed a lot of hustle late in the game op his goal when the Pests pulled their goalie, Leitch shot it down the rink which hit the end boards. 'He outskated the Bel- mont defensemen, took the puck off the boards and scored. The Irish take on Seaforth to- night at 8:15 p.m. 1 "THE GREATEST OF THEM ALL" The setting was in OAKLAND, and the BOSTON BRUINS were playing the SEALS. The BRUINS were killing a penalty and BOBBY ORR was spinning some magic. The goalie for the OAK- LAND SEALS was my buddy and ex -team mate GARY "SUIT- CASE" SMITH and he told me that it was a goal that he'd never forget. As he remembers it, Bobby was doing his usual thing, killing thepenalty which meant he never let the other team touch the puck. He'd go behind his net and if someone chased him, he'd go in front of the net and continue killing time off the penalty. On this night, as Bobby was slowly coming up the middle of the ice, he lost his glove but continued into the' SEAL'S end. He then spinned himself around and began skating backwards with the puck back up through centre -ice again. As he came near his glove laying at centre -ice, he reached down and somehow put his hockey glove back on. He then circled around the ice and took the puck back behind his own net. Then he really "turned on the jets" and came roaring down the ice, blasting past everyone and he whistled a shot at Gary who caught the puck but was juggling it in the air. As bobby was whizzing by the OAKLAND net, (fmishing off his rush) he reached back with his stick and tapped the puck behind SMITH and into the net. WAYNE CASHMAN told me that the BRUIN'S were on their feet (at the bench) cheering when he looked over at the OAKLAND bench. They were cheering .too! it wsa the first time two teams cheered the same goal as the players from both teams paid homage to the "GREATEST PLAYER" who ever lived or will ever play. I guess that there will be a few people out there who will say "sure Grapes says this because he coached ORR and he's biased, and maybe your right". But let me refresh your memory and give you a few stats. BOBBY ORR ... (in only nine full seasons) CALDER TROPHY - Rookie of the year 1966-67. NORRIS TROPHY - 8 times as league's best defensemari. ART ROSS - league scoring champion. Bobby is the only de- fenseman to win the scoring "AND HE DID IT TWICE!" HART TROPHY - League M.V.P. (3 years in a row) CONN SMYTHE TROPHY - 2 times as M.V.P. of Stanley Cup Play-offs CANADA CUP M.V.P. - 1976 leading his Team (lad, to the champieltship. AND.... here's the last bit of information. In 1974-75, Bobby bads 46 goals, 87 assists and was a plus 128 for the season, to put the plus and minus statistics in perspective; the guy who had the best plus and minus last season was +60. BUT... as the players who had to play against him can attest, he was no sweetheart who could just score points, he could do it all, block shots, bodycheck and although he doesn't like to admit it, he could "Drop the gloves" once in awhile. There's lot's more to tell you about BOBBY ORR and in our next segment I'll share with you the comments of RED FISHER who has seen agd cov- ered them all as well as a tribute to Bobby from SERGE SAVARD. I'll even tell you about the time 1 first laid eyes on BOBBY ORR. The Lincohts and the Hawks are affiliated which means they can transfer players between the two clubs. It only took 1:39 into the second period for the duo to combine and give theloc'Ls a 3-0 lead. Manders collected his second 'point of the night with 6:56 left in elite middle frame when he set up 'Barton. Manders was knocked down by Belmont's Les Nemeth during the play and all three ended up going to the penalty box follow- ing a scruni in front of the Pests' net. Just 18 seconds later, speedy winger Ray Cousineau made it 5-0 when he swept around Wilson to score a shorthanded goal. With just over three minutes to go in the second, Cousineau notched his 18th of the year as he was on the receiving end of a pass from Audet. Irvine was sent to the penalty box near the end of the period and just eight seconds later, he was joined by Manders. While the Pests' had a two-man advantage for nearly two minutes, they failed to score. In the third period, Dalrymple tripped Erin Neville but it was the Hawks reaping the benefits of a powerplay after Neville retaliated, drew an unsportsmanlike penalty and was slapped with a 10 minute misconduct. McCann's bid fbr his second shut- out of the year was broken when Jon Vandenwerf's shot found its way through a crowd and it was 6-2 when Tim Uuebanks let go with a quick shot off the draw. Hawks happenings:...Dalrymple had one of his best games of the season as he had three assists...The new line of Audet, Ropp and Cou- sineau had six .points. That trio could take a lot of scoring pressure off of the line of Sean McCann, Todd McCann and Robinson...The Hawks hosted the North Middlesex Stars last night and Friday take on Lucan . Exeter Hawks' forward Ray Cousineau made sure about this shot as he beat Belmont goalie Matt Wilson during Friday night's OHA Junior Development League action in Exeter. Panthers' corner Home's 20 points leads juniors EXETER - The South Huron District -High J;eitool.,jttoior boys' basketball team started 1993 off on the right foot Wednesday • after- noon, beating visiting Seaforth 42- 28. Paced by the outstanding 20 - point effort of forward Jeremy Home, the Panthers led throughout the Huron Conference game and held a commanding 29-15 lead at the end of the third quarter. Home and Kevin Ross grabbed several key rebounds and Brian McAllister controlled the offence and _added 11 points, most of those on free throws late in the game. Two minutes into the fourth quarter, McAllister made a nice play when he stole the ball away from a Seaforth player who had just snatched a defensive rebound and then fed Horne who had brok- en into the middle of the key. High scoring game: The senior Panthers were not as fortunate in their fast game of 1993 as they were beaten 87-61. Although South Huron put a lot of points on ;ate board, they Keith Crawford, right; and teammate Simon Dinney Wed to get up to block a shot against Seaforth during wdprot's Huron Conference senior baseketball,4plae. couldn't stop Stalorth's eight three - pointers and, Eric Johnston who had 28 points for the visitors. The Panthers kept with their op- ponent and it looked as though it would be a fairly close game when Greg Agnew swished a three -- pointer in the second quarter. But Seaforth jumped to a 45-29 half- time lead. One of the nicest baskets of the game was scored by Panthers' guard Ryan Stuart. With 3:30 left in the first half, he fought his way through heavy traffic and under- handed the bell which softly went in. But Stuart got into foul trouble early in the second half which seemed to take a little spark away from the hosts. Dennis McCann came off the bench and was on the receiving end of a nice pass from Agnew. Johnston made a great play at the buzzer ending the third quarter as he went up for a shot, was fouled by South Huron's Simon Dinney, but while laying on his back, watched the ball go in. He made a free throw and it was 66-41 Sea - forth at the end of three periods. Agnew, who led the Panthers with 13 points, played well in the rump quarter and in the final eight minutes hit a couple of three - pointers and connected with a long shot from the top of the key. The Panthers continue Huron Conference action today when they travel to Goderieb. asikett ones LUCAN - Chris Haskett, a Lucas Minor Hockey Association product has been signed by the Listowel Cyclones of the Midwestern Junior B' Hockey League, Haskell, 15, has been with the Lucas Irish of the OHA Develop- ment (Junior '8') League since Ofe. *tart of the season.
