ATTA BOY GIRL....
The word out or TAMPA about MANON (Ma -no) REAUME is
that the players thought the world of her while she was at the
LIGHTNING'S training camp. She never asked for any special fa-
vours and she didn't want to upset the players. WAYNE CASH -
MAN. assistant coach for TAMPA BAY tells me that she said "Ill
dress in a broom closet if that's what you want. I realize that these
guys are professional, it's their life and I don't want to upset them."
You gotta love her for that. I'm also told that when the guys blast-
ed pucks at her, she didn't pull up or flinch (and they were all watch -
mg to see if she would) she just hung in there. MANON never pro-
fessed that she wanted to be a great goaltender in the NHL, she Just
wanted to improve her game and she plays because she loves hock-
ey. MANON is now with the ATLANTA KNIGHTS in the minors
now, she's going to write a book, be in a made for TV movie, and
make $500,000 dollars. As far as the TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
players arc concerned, it couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
Good Luck MANON!
LEAFS NUMBER ONE GOALIE'
Speaking of goaltenders, what about the story of FELIX POT -
VIN, the TORONTO MAPLE LEAF'S number one goalie as I
talk now. AT this writing he has an average of 2.49 goals against
with a save average of 9.19, one of the best records in the league. If
he wouldn't had that blow-out with DETROIT where he got beat 7
to 1, he.would've had an average of below 2 goals against.
If you can believe this, when he was 18, he wasn't picked in the
first three rounds. I used to go to those drafts but no more. I can't
stand watching a kid sit there and wait through five hours and not
get picked. Some are embarrassed, some cry, their dreams gone up
in smoke. All of their hard work has gone down the tube.
Unfortunately that's what happened to FELIX, but in 1990 the
leafs picked him 31st and he's been starring in every game since.
(well... in almost every game). Funny how things work out. RICK
WAMSLEY, TORONTO MAPLE LEAF back-up goalie behind
FUHR hurt his knee so they bring up
FELIX from ST. JOHN'S LEAFS of
the AHL to back up GRANT. FUHR
hurts his knee in a morning skate so
PAT BU1ci'IS has to go with FELIX
and it's just what the kid needed. Lots
of pressure and tons of work. He has
become one of the premiere goalies in
the league and I wonder how many
other kids who walked out of that draft
with tears in their eycs, would've made
it if they too would've had a second chance like FELIX. Sometimes
life is unfair.
