Hawks have to get down to business
By Treed Groves
T.Aeltiff
EXETER - "We're going to get
down to business."
That's what (barge Pratt said af-
ter his Exeter 'Hawks lost 10-8 to
hosrBelmont Saturday night.
With the loss, the Hawks see
'their OHA Development League
west division record Op :to 10-7.
Exeter sillSn their 10th game of the
season -at-home Friday night: a 5-1
win over Mt. Brydges Bulldogs.
-The Hawks continue:to slump de-
fensively as they have given up five
goals per game.
Against the Bulldogs at the South
Huron Recreation Centre Friday
night, there was 8:53 left in the first
period when Andrew Barton
scored. With just 17 ticks left in the
first frame, Ray Cousineau drifted
down the right side and blasted one
past Jay Detlor.
The Bulldogs got right beck in in
the second on a breakaway which
caught the Hawks' out of position.
"Were an offensive minded
team. Guys who won't beckcheck
are going to sit -and witch someone
else do it," said -Pratt.
That 'was the only goal of the
game Clint McCann would give up
as the Hawks scored three more.
"He's (McCann) playing better
this year so far, than I have ever
seen in play for the Hawks," noted
Frau.
In the second period, Sean
McCann one -timed it into the net
-on a powerplay which gave Exeter
a two -goal cushion once again.
Quickly into the third, captain Paul
Manders connected.
Veteran defenseman Larry Lewis
drew a penalty in the Hawks' end of

on this play but he helped the Hawks beat
Mt. Brydges.

Haskett paces Irish with two goals

LUCAN - The Irish got some
high mileage out of a few unexpect-
ing engines Wednesday night.
Rookie centre Chris Haskeu
scored two goals and veteran de-
fenseman Chris Chater played well
back on the blueline to lift the host
Irish to a 7-1 win over the visiting
Me Brydges Bulldogs.
Lucan's 14th OHA Development
League victory also saw scoring
from Jason Reidhead got his fifth
of the season while Ed VanKer-
koerle, Steve Moore, Sean Kaczma-
rek and captain Andy Ross.
"We just finished talking to him
(Haskett) at pracuce about starting
to pick a up. He was kind of coast-
ing. We told hien he has to start
jumping into the play," said Lucan
coach Ken Needham.
Haskett's first goal came just 2:11
into the middle period when he
walked en on Bulldogs' goalie Jay
Detlor ,and d inne. np-.into 'the
comer -from a.tough angle.
The rookie connected again in the
third and almost got a hat trick on
the third shitt.
Although Chafer did not score, he
kept the puck in the ML Brydges'
zone on several key offensive push-
es and was also used a lot to kill
penalties.
"Chris has been playing football
at Oakridge every night, that's all
done now. He'll get better now be-
cause he won't be hurt," said -Need-
ham.
Lucan led just 1-0 after the first
period on Reidhead's goal but the
biggest play of the game was when
Matt Munro, called up from the
midgets, laid a big hit on Todd
Baker behind the Irish net.
Less than three -and-a-half min-
utes into the second frame, it was
3-0 for the home team. Mt. Brydges
had a powerplay for nearly tour
minutes in this period but could not
capitalize.
Ross got the nicest goal of the
third penod as he stole the puck off
off of a Mt. Brydges'defenseman
and easily beat Detlor for his fourth
of the year.
The visitors narrowed the gap in
a big way just 38 seconds into the
third when a puck wok a weird de-
_.flection;Jutd got tby_Eoin' Meaner -

That was the only miscue on:the
rookie netmindei s part and all
night. and all season he has looked
very sharp.
"Our defenseman couldn't clear it
and they got the rebound. 1t was
kind of a fluke goal," said Mciner-
ney. Dwayne Hay was credited
with the Bulldogs' lone goal.

McInerney who came out of
Wednesday's game with a very im-
pressive 2.75 goals against average,
played for the London 'AAA' ban-
tams last year.
He admitted he was going for the
shutout bid, but didn't seem too
overly disappointed about it.
"1 practice with the (London Jr.
B) Nationals every Thursday. I'm
kind of like their third goalie. I've
.already dressed for a game."
Setting his sights on higher hock-
ey, McInerney said the shots in
Junior 'D' are more accurate than
they were in bantam.
"These guys shoot better. This is
my first year in the league and I
didn't know what to expect."

the rink and a few seconds later,
blasted one from the point to score
his first of the season.
Throughout the game, and pretty
well most of the season, the Hawks
have seemed like a light bulb.
Turning on their bursts of enthu-
siasm like a light switch.
Prau said they are simply trying
to hard to put the puck in the net,
and not hard enough to keep it out.
"Our guys arc panicking too
much on the bench. If we're in a
close game they feel a lot of pres-
sure to score. They're hitting the
panic button too early."
Manders who netted his eighth of
the season against the Bulldogs no-
ticed the Hawks are not coming to
the rink prepared to play a full
game.
"We can never play a full 60 min-
ute game. We have a different
blend of guys then last year. It's
hard to get everyone together to
know what they're supposed to do,"
said Exeter's captain.
Manders, a hard-hitting winger
has turned his game around. He's
not taking as many penalties and is
showing a lot of leadership on the
bench and in the dressing room.
