Croklnole club planned for Varna

VARNA - Atte crokinole players are planning a
crokinole club to play twice a month at the Varna
United Church. A steering committee of Mervyn and
Margaret Hayter, Ralph Stephenson and Marg and
Ivan McClymont are working on organlration.
They hope to begin play on Tuesday November 24 at
8 p.m. The club needs both regulars who will play
each night or send a substitute. Members must be 16 or
older but substitutes arc also needed with no minimum
age. These would be players who- would like to play
occasionally but not on a regular basis.

Wednesday November 18 at 8 p.m. Goshen UCW
will meet at the manse in Varna.
Thursday November 19 at 7 p.m. the Trends (age 10-
13) will meet in Brucefbeld United Church.
White Gift Service will be held Sunday November
29 in both chruches. Please bring as Christmas gift or
non-perishable food or money if p..es. 31e. Please do
-not wrap gifts but you may bring in a plastic grocery
bag. Money may be put in a white envelope marked
"White Gift".
November 15 the Youth Group (Grade 9 and up) got
ioaetlter at the Manse in Btucefield and enjoyed mo-
vies and a snack. Next meeting is December 6 which
will be caroling at the Blue Water Rest Home in Zu-
rfch from 7 - 810- p.m .
Heather Beierling and Heather and Valerie Laurie,
members of the Seaforth and District All Girls March-
ing Band were busy last weekend. They marched in
the London Santa Claus Parade on Saturday and the
Toronto Santa Claus parade on Sunday. Saturday No-
vember 21 they will be marching in the Goderich San-
ta Claus Parade. Sunday November 22 they will be
marching in the Brampton Santa Claus parade. Heath-
er Beierling plays the clarinet. Heather Laurie plays
the flute and Valerie plays the trumpet.
The Stanley Township Rec Committee are once
again sponsoring a family fun night on Friday Novem-
ber 20 from 8 - 11 p. m. with entertainment by a D1.
Prices arc S10 a family or 55 per single. Bring your
family and come on out and enjoy this fun night. La-
dies please bring finger desserts.

Congratulations to Lucien Nor-
mand Dale Bray of Chatham and
Patricia Kay Sharer of Grand
Bend who were married on Satur-
day November 7. On Sunday No-
vember 15 Bishop Frederick Hen-
ry will confirm about 40 young
people at St. Christopher's Parish
in Forest: Among those con-
firmed are members of this par-
ish: Julie Baltessen, Kristy Hod-
gins. Emily Knapp, Eric Lefebrc,
Jonathon Lovic, Crystal Mennen,
Christopher Scheeley, Laura
Stokkermans and Nicol Turk-
heim.
On November 8 the mass com-
memorated Remembrance Day,
as our church hosted members of
the Legion and Scouts for a spe-
cial service. Carrying their flags,
units of the legion, Scouts,
Guides, Venturers, Pathfinders,
Cubs, Beavers, Brownies and
Sparks marched into the church.
Pastor Father Beck celebrated the
Mass and Deacon Sam Dixon, --a
WWII veteran gave the homily.
November 22 is the Feast of
Christ the King. the end of the Li-
turgical Year, and November 29
marks the First Sunday of Advent,
as we prepare for the Christmas
season.
A Children's Choir is rehearsing
for the Christmas liturgy, meeting
at the home of Choir Director Do -
bras Tigbe on Wednesday even-
ings at 6:45 p.m. So far, 22 chil-
dren have come out for practice.
This week, the church will be
closed for both Masses and choir
practice, as workmen connect the
new heating system from the par-
ish hall to the church. The new
kitchen is nearly finished, with
sinks, counters and cabinets in-
stalled. Father Beck hopes to have
everything ready for the Christ-
mas season.

December 1, marks the Christ-
mas Ecumenical at Church of
God. 8 p.m. Guest speaker Eve-
lyn Krueger. December 3 Christ-
mas Party for Community Living,
South Huron at South Huron Rec-
reation Centre in Exeter, 5:30
p.m. cocktails. Volunteer and staff
appreciation night.
December 6 is the Christmas
party for Order of Alhambra, fam-
ilies and friends. Alhambra Hall
1:30 - 5 p.m. Sunday.
On December 9 will be the
Christmas party for Catholic
Women's League 'members and
husbands, at the Alhambra Hall at
8 p.m.
And on December 6 the "new
Humnia Singers" present Christ-
mas with Friends at Exeter United
Church, 2:30 pan. and 7:30 p.m.

Grand Bend CWL meet
GRAND BEND The Grand
Bend CWL met on November 10
at the Alhambra Hall at 8 p.m.,
with President Cathy Vrolyk chair-
ing the business.
An extra 5150 was aero to sup-
port one additional family this year
through Save A Family India, as
well as our present special family
Plaques from the CWL are to be
presented to all those receiving the
Sacrament of Confirmation from
our parish, on November 15.
Final plans were discussed kr
catering the lunch at . the Annual
Alhambra Cash Draw Dance, to be
held on Friday, November 20 at
the 'Medford Arena. All members
arc asked to bring in their cash reg-
ister' tapes to Dina Kelders for the

An invitation was received to at-
tend the Christkas Ecumenical on
December 1, with a program con-
tribution from our CWL. About 10
Christmas baskets will be sent out
to parishioners this year, according
to Toni -Vandenberbc, and cards
sent to others.
The CWL agreed to donate 5100
for a Christmas Party for the
church choir. it was agreed to
frame a special picture of late
church organist Paul, Dietrich and
hang it in the new parish hall when
a piano is obtained.
Collection baskets for food and
toys for the needy families of our
community will be placed in the
church throughout December, to
be sent in the Lioness Christmas
baskets.
The Christmas meeting will be
held on Wednesday December 9 at
8 p.m., with husbands invited. Af-
ter the meeting was adjourned,
members enjoyed several games of
bingo and everyone won at least
one prize.
Exeter UCW
holds meeting
-EXETER - The afternoon unit of
the UCW of Exeter Untied Church
met on November 12 at 2 p.m. with
Leona Hern presiding. She read a
poem. The minutes were read by
Doris Siliery, treasurer's report giv-
en by Latera Sillery, and card report
by Audrey McRoberts.
Mary Neib read a poem on Re-
membrance Day.
Devotions were conducted by
Barb Harrison assisted by Chris
Philips and Beryl Elgee. Beryl read
a true story of a young girl on Mad-
agascar Island who had been taken
as a slave.
Mrs. Ted Clark rendered a beauti-
ful solo, accompanying herself.
Leona Hern introduced Janet
Kleinsmidt who spoke on Africa as
they had lived there several years.
Their farm consists of 1000 acres.

moose hunting trip to Englehart,
near the Quebec border. The men
reported bad weather.
Congratulations to Joc Kaak Jr.
on winning a provincial champion-
ship last Saturday at the East Lon-
don Boxing Club. Joc defeated
Troy Talbot to win the Senior
Light Heavyweight. Kaak plans to
go to Prince Edward Island for the
Nationals December 3-5.

GRAND BEND - Grand Bend
United Church Women's afternoon
unit met last Thursday afternoon in
the S.S. rooms at the church, with
20 members present. Hazel Broad
gavc opening worship, giving her
thoughts on fall, and she read the
poems "Our Country", "A Step to
Climb to Meet Our Heavenly Fa-
ther" and "Autumn Leaves".
President, Loreen Gill, conducted
the business. A highlight this
month was the successful turkey
supper, with 402 tickets sold and
68 take-out orders. Next week the
ladies will be making beef and tur-
key pot pies to sell. Donations
were made various charities. The
remainder of the afternoon was
spent packing and wrapping Christ-
mas boxes for shut-ins. Roll call
was bringing in articles for the
Christmas bureau.
The Christmas Ecumenical Ser-
vice will be held December 1 at the
Church of God.
Personals
Grand Bend Golden Age Club
held another Progressive Euchre at
the Legion last Wednesday eve-
ning. Winners were: High score
for ladies- Catherine Junker; Low
score for ladies- Katherine Becker,
High score for men- Mary Robin-
son, playing a man's card; low

Van DeVooren and Verna Lovie,
