In just a couple of days, Exeter's South Hum Recreation Centre will be in the midst of one of the largest hockey tournaments in Southwestern On- tario. Beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m: when the Exeter Atom Broncos faceoff against Mitchell, a total of 24 teams will converge on our town for the Second Annual Bill Batten Memorial Tournament. Exeter Minor Hockey Association has sponsored the tourney for several years but last year named it in honour of the former Times -Advocate edi- tor and hockey volunteer. While the Broncos begin the action Friday night, the Exeter Peewee Le, gions take on Mitchell at 9 p,m. and bright and early the next morning, the Exeter Novice Waxers will take on Seaforth at 8 a.m. A year ago, Stephen Township edged Thedford 4-3 in a thrilling novice final. Stephen meets Kitchener at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Stephen also has an atom team in the tournament and they meet Thedford at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Seaforth is back, they beat Lambeth 3-2 for the Atom 'A' title last year. That game went into overtime and even into a player elimination format to determine the winner. Exeter peewees reached the 'A' final last year only to be edged 2-1 by New Hamburg who are not scheduled in this year's event. Action concludes on Sunday afternoon with the 'A' and 'B' champion- ship games. What's next??? Exeter Men's Rec Hockey Thurs. Brydges doubled Thedford 10-5 for the 'B' title. Jeff Glavin had three assists for Stephen while Craig Glavin had a goal and set up another. Also scoring were Rob Morrissey and Pres Lavier. Stephen reached the championship game after they eliminated Zurich in a close 4-2 game Sunday morning. In that one, there was no scoring in the first period and it wasn't until the second when Ray Bierling knocked in a Richard Masse shot. Bili Hodge and Craig Glavin tied it for Stephen in the third frame and it was 3-1 when Lavier just managed to get one past Zurich goalie Mary De- grooL Brad Moir pulled Zurich to within a goal in the fatal minutes but Craig Glavin scored into the empty net for his second of the game. The biggest hit of the game came when Masse and Morrissey collided with just 28 sec- onds left. Stephen won their opening game Saturday, a 7-3 decision over Strath- roy. Craig Glavin had three goals in that won. Zurich opened up with a very big 22-5 win over Thedford. Moir and Chris Keller had four each for the winners with three from Bryan De- nomme.
