Exeter Hawks beat Cents, now in second

EXETER - Friday night was very
interesting at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre.
In a battle for second place, the
Exeter Hawks easily bandied the
tough Seaforth Centenairess 10-4.
Late in the second period, Exeter
assistant coach Dan Mudge was
given a ten-minute misconduct.
Following a Hawk goal, Mudge
said something to referee Rob An-
derson, and the ref gave him not a
two minute bench minor or a game
ejection but a ten-minute miscon-
duct and told Mudge he could
come back to the tench after the -10
minutes. Stranger things have hap-
pened.
But what wasn't strange was the
Hawks' fourth straight win and tak-
ing over second place behind the
undefeated Lucan Irish.
The start of Friday's game looked
as though it would be a good one
as it took nearly half a period for
the Hawks to get on the board
when Steve Farquhar, called up
from the Exeter midgets, scored
from Shayne Robinson and Sean
McCann and then Robinson netted
his first of two from Sean McCann
and Farquhar.
Veteran forward Ray Cousineau
had been- in 4,.liule bit of a scoring
slump as he had gone four straight
games before finally connecting
against Lambeth last weekend
But he broke out against Seaforth
netting two and setting up another.
Despite the slump, Cousineau
wasn't too disappointed about not
scoring.
"It would bother me more if we
.were losing and I was missing the
chances. but the other guys were
scoring," he said after the game.
While Farquhar, Cousineau, Sean
McCann and Robinson each had
two goals on Friday, John O'Hara
and Dan Irvine also scored. Robin-
son added three assists and de-
fenseman Larry Lewis helped out
on three goals.
Bruce Ysselstein, Karsten Car-
roll, Jamie Hislop and Jason Dun-
seith answered for the visitors.

DINO CICCEDRELLI is one of my favorite guys. I'm so glad to see
Dino go to DETROIT, a aontender for the Stanley Cup and he could be the
final touch. Nobody takes the punishment like Dano in front of the net. He's
never backed down from, anybody regardless of their size. (Just ask LUKE
RICHARDSON). On top of this hell get you 30 to 40 goals every year and
now that he's with the Wings. LOOK OUT!
I was talking to TILLSONBURG'S COLIN CAMPBELL. the assistant
coach of the NEW YORK RANGERS the other night when the Rangers
were in Toronto to play the LEAFS. Boy, when I saw Colin and got talking
with him and ROGER NEILSON in the morning skate. did they ever get
-stiffed in the playoffs last year, after MARIO got upped by ADAM
GRAVES and hurt his hand. The ref called 10 powerplays against the
Rangers in one game and then a penalty in overtime and the next two penal-
ty shots against the Rangers. I can't remember a penalty shot against me in
all the time I played in the playoffs. Boy! Did someone want them out of the
playoffs or what?
•
•
If you remember I said on Hockey Night in Canada, in COACHES
CORNER, that MARIO'S hand was not broken and he will come back.
Not only did he comeback, but PITTSBURG won the Cup and Mario won
the Most Valuable Player. (Why don't they listen to me!).
COLIN is an assistant now. but he will be a head coach soon. He's ono of
the most respected guys in the league.
I don't know. it's got to be me, but there's something wrong with a coun-
try that wont play it's NATIONAL ANTHEM at sporting events or by or-
chestra's
r-
chestras for fear of irritating audiences. They won't play it for fear of boo-
ing it like they do at the MONTREAL OLYMPIC STADIUM for the
EXPO games. Imagine a province, hating our flag and refitting to fly it. it's
so ironic, that we change the beautiful CANADIAN ENSIGN, our ances-
tors fought under just to please the FRENCH. (They couldn't stand the Un-
ion Jack on our flag). So then we end up with the MAPLE LEAF. and now
they can't stand that flag. You figure it out!
Got to give it to MANON REAUME. Imagine the guts it took to go
down to the TAMPA BAY LIGHTING training camp. Here she is five
feet. six inches and at 128 pounds and the spotlight is on her from the first
day. All that pressure and she carne through big time. She obviously knew it
was a PR stunt by PHIL and boy did it work. CBC, ABC, NBC, TSN,
ESPN, SPORTS CHANNEL AMERICA, CNN and all the rat covered it
and every major magazine and newspapers covered it. So everybody was
happy. She did ilright in the net, gave great interviews and was offered a
contract so nobody was hurt.
But if you ask me "was she there on talent?" Not a chance. The only rea-
son site was there was because she was a woman. Let me ask you how many
goalies. who played 17 minutes in goal for junior hockey, had three goals
scored on her in 12 shots, got hit in the head and taken out and ended up
with a shot at the NHL? Do you know of any. I think not! But she went, did
the job and although I don't know if she
helped women's hockey or not (the women's
league seem to resent her for doing this, for
some reason) but I do see a book, TV mini-
series in ii a works and why not? I think it
would be super.
A lot of people are on PHIL ESPOSI-
TO for using a women for a public relations
stunt. but really... who used who?

Note: The Wrath of Grapes will run every other week as a regular T -A
sports festive. Exeter Mohawks' fwwa d Dale Gibbon fired one up on Ingersoll goalie Dean Smith during
Sunday's Senior 'A' game in Exeter. The Mohawks won 15-3.
Cousineau's first goal came just
52 seconds into the middle period
when the Hawks were playing
shorthanded, less than three min-
utes later O'Hara also scored short-
handed.
Coach George Pratt said a now,
more aggressive forechecking sys-
tem is paying off with big divi-
dends.
"It's working really well. The
guys are picking it up quicker than
I thought they would," said Prau.
Cousineau got his second of the
night with only 54 seconds left in
the second period when he put one
up high past Seaforth goalie Scou
Wildgust. Jesse Buchanan started
the game but was quickly replaced
52 seconds into the second.
"When I went to shoot I hit
Sean's (McCann) skate with the
back of my stick. 1 didn't get all of
it but it still went up," said Cousi-
neau of his second goal.
While Seaforth's goaltending was
shakey, Exeter's Kirk Durand, get-
• ting his first start since the Oct. 18
loss to Mt. Brydges, made several
big saves including one on a Chad
Ramer breakaway.
"Kiik really bounced back from
the last time he played. We've been
working with him," said Pratt of
Durand who made 36 saves.
Friday night, the Hawks did a lot
of line juggling and Pratt said it
helps to keep everyone in the game.
Stumbling over Seaforth goalie Scott Wildgust during Friday night's action was Exeter forward,
Sean McCann. The host Hawks made it four straight junior hockey wins.
With a 6-3 record, Cousineau says
it's not that big of a surprise to be
doing so well.
"We've got a young club but
we've got parts of three all -Ontario
championship teams in the past
four years here. We've got a lot of
Beat Bulldogs. Stars
heart and we know how to win,"
said Cousineau.
Hawks hggyenings:u.The nicest
goal of the night came with about
seven minutes left in the game
when Paul Manders carried the
puck into the Seaforth end and de-
spite being tied up by two players,

the -rookie Durand is 5.31...
Irish make it eight straight victories
MT. BRYDGES - Once again the Lucan Irish are off to a great start, go-
ing eight -for -October as they upped their Ontario Junior Development
record to 8-0 Saturday night.
In Mt. Brydges, veteran forward Greg DePrest led the way with two
goals and three assists as the Irish led 3-1 after the first period and 7-1 af-
ter 40 minutes.
Rookie Steve Moore also came up big as he scored twice, setting up two
more, while Jason Glasser netted a pair and had an assist. Also scoring for
the winners were Ed VanKerkoerle, Jeff Stanton, Jim Stanton and Jason
Reidhead.
This game was a quiet one penalty wise, as referee Dave Whaley called
just nine minor penalties. six of them to the Irish.

DePrest had another good game on Wednesday as the host Irish beat the
Northmiddlesex Stars. He had two goals and an assist for a big eight -point
week. Jason McLeod had two tallies and a pair of assists.
VanKerkoerle continues to score as he had one plus an assist with sin-
gles from Glasser and Moore.
Rookie goalie Eoin McInerney not only made 27 saves but assisted on a
goal. Chris Haskeu and Jeff Stanton were given game misconducts.
Lucky charms:,..The Irish held their first team breakfast and get togeth-
er on Sunday and it was well attended by players, family and executive
members...After eight games, DePrest leads the Irish in scoring with eight
goals and 10 assists...
Senior 'A' hockey
Mohawks win three in a row
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - Three games, three
wins.
The Exeter Mohawks outscored
their opponents 34-10 and ran Weir
OHA Senior 'A' hockey record to
3-1 this past week.
-But_while.the- Mohawks...defend-
ing provincial champions are light-
ing up the scoreboard, spectator at-
tendance is at a low. For Sunday's
15-3 win against the visiting Inger-
soll B's, Were were only 60 fans at
the South Huron Recreation Cen-
tre.
The B's didn't help boost the
spectator spirit as they showed up
with just seven skaters and two
goalies.
"It's disappointingdeftuutely,"
said Exeter coach manager
Dave Revington. Ws not good for
the league but we can't get discou-
raged. We can't blame than (Inger-
soll) they're a good organization."
After the first period in which the
hosts jumped into an easy 5-0 lead,
it was decided by the two Seams
and the officials that the woad
and third periods be straight time.
"They requested to go straight
time due to a leek of bodies. Guys
get tired and frustrated," said Rev -
Wgton•
Second -year forward Scou Pfaff
led the scoring on Sunday as he
had two goals and five assists for a
very big seven -point night_ Rookie
Rob Kingshott did not score but
had six assists.
Joe Scherer netted four tallies
with two each from Paul Barton,
Cory McKee and Andre Prevost
while Troy Harness, Greg Snyder
and Dale Gibbon also connected.
Prevost has looked very good on
the ice lately and has stacked up
eight points in the last three games.
"Preys has been playing well all
year and McKee is turning into a
well-rounded player," said Roving -
ton.
One of four rookies in the lineup
on Sunday, McKee who is usually
a defenseman, played forward as
the Mohawks only had 12 skaters
dressed.
Obviously the Mohawks were
able to have full command of the
ice against the shorthanded B's but
at times they did not look all that
sharp.
"It's a good opportunity to work
on things but it doesn't work that
way," said Revington.
Trevor Hunter .got the start be-
tween the pipes for Exeter and the
only goals he allowed were in the
second period as Ingersoll's Steve
Bober, Terry Hildebrand and Chris
Westbrook scared.

Friday night in Dorchester, the
host Dolphins had a full team and
led 2-1 at theend of the first period
before the visitors turned it on and
scored four unanswered goals in
the second.
Veteran Gord Brooks led the of-
fence with two goals and four as-
sists while Kingshott scored three
.and set up two mote. Also scoring
were Scherer with throe and singles
from Barton and Pfaff.
Goalie Jeff Hill made 33 saves.

Jumping into a 3-1 first period
lead, the Mohawks won their first
of the season in Strathroy Wednes-
