EXETER - In a celebration of
Canada's 125th birthday, some area
youths have been treated to the ex -
perience of a lifeumc. In conjunc-
tion with Air Canada the federal
government has introduced a youth
exchange program, which has giv-
en 18 Huron County youths the
chance to navel to Alberta.
"The kids are just having a great
.time," said Michael Rau, Supervis-
or for the Voyageur '92 program.
"It's a great opportunity to learn
about each others cultural differ-
Beginnng yesterday (Tuesday).
18 Huron County students and two
supervisors began their eight day
trek to northern Alberta to explore
the area. Points of interest on the
trip will include Fort McMurray,
the Athabasca Tar Sands and Wa-
terway Systems, Peace River,
Slave Lake. native Indian reserva-
tions and of course, the West Ed-
monton Mall.
"I'm pretty excited about it." said
16 -year-old Mike Herbert
Hubert, who Yves in Hensall,

The grade 1l South Huron DHS

Herbert's partner for the ex-
change has been Susan Starr. a 17 -
yew -old grade 12 student who
hopes to become a ve ermarian
She lives in Clyde, Alberta about
45 minutes north of Edmonton on a
bee[ and crop farm.
Although this wasn't her first trip
to Ontano, it was kistutely an ex-
perience she enjoyed and appreciat-
ed. Last year she wok pen in a 4-1-1
exchange and stayed in Dryden
"1 really love it here," said Starr. —
"lt's exciting and the people arc
really nice."
According to the Alberta native,
one of the crew's most enjoyable
excursions was to the jail in Gode-
rich. In addition, they had one free
day which enabled them to explore
whatever sights they and their host
families chose. An added treat for
many was the Bryan Adams Free-
dom Festival Concert in London.
which they were fortunate enough
to attend. By some stroke of luck.
the concert tour just happens to be
rolling through Alberta while the•
exchange is still on
"After each tour we sit down as a
group and talk about it so we've
really come to know each other
well.' said Stan. "Mike is almost
like a brother to me now "
Full of practical jokes. Starr said
the exchange has been full of them,
and Herbert readily agrees.
"The first night she got here we
snuck -yin and dumped -water -on
be Iait$lned. But tie 'ilea,.
morning I got it right back."
