EXETER -
One good
thing about
provincial
tournaments
is the teams
don't know
what to expect out
of each other.
That holds true for the Ontario
Baseball Association bantam 'D'
championships to be held this
weekend in Exeter and Dashwood.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday
morning, eight teams as far away
as Parry Sound and as close as
hosting Exeter, will go head-to-
head to determine the best.
"Dresden and Wheatley are pret-
ty good teams. They were in the
same tournament as us (Petrolia).
We watched them play," said Exet-
er manager Gary Hartman.
He along with coaches Bill
Hodge and Albert VanDyken have
combined the two Exeter bantam
squads and come up with an entry
which has a good shot at winning it
all.
Most of the players come from
the Bantam I team which this year
compiled a 17-11 record in both
league and tournament play and
won a pair of games at the WOBA
tournament

Jim Beckett, vita -president of the
Exeter Minor Hockey Association
said Bauer. -contribution was
nothing less than outstanding and
that the work he did an behalf of
minor hockey was very important.
Finally honored: It has taken
Exeter several years to accomplish
it, but they finally were able to
honor Dave Shaw, Exeter's only
professional hockey player.
Quebec Nordiques' first pick in
the 1982 draft, Shaw has been a de-
fensemen with not only the Nor-
diques but the New York Rangers,
the Edmonton Oilers and now with
the Minnesota North. Stars.
Shaw, a very humble individual,
presented a North Stars' jersey with
his name and number and a picture
of himself to the rec center.
"It's a great pleasure to be hang-
ing up on the arena wall. I'd like to
thank minor hockey and everyone
Pitching is the key to winning
baseball and the Exeter team has
depth in this department Seven of
the 15 players are capable of pitch-
ing.
"1 haven't seen anyone pitch hard-
er than our team," said Harman.
He expects -Mike France and the
only lefthanded pitcher on the team
Daryl Hartman to do the bulk of the
pitching.
"We have two pitchers we expect
to go a full seven innings, the oth-
ers go about four."
Rounding out the pitching staff
for Exeter arc Andy Glavin, JeT
Glavin, Adam Duskocy, Craig Gla-
vin and Scot Rowe.

ter)
The defense will be backed by a
couple of big hitters in centerfielder
Bill Hodge and France who will not
only pitch but could sec action be-
hind the plate and at shortstop.
"He's (Hodge) going to be our
key hitter, him and Mike France."
At the recent WOBA tournament
in Durham, Hodge went 7 -for -10.

CALEDONIA - The three-hour bus trip home from Caledonia was filled
with celebration for the Centralia Selects last Monday night as they cap-

With a score of 16-8, the Selects swept the best -of -three series after tak-
ing the opener 5-1.
In the final game played Monday, Marianne Scott and Anne Conlin

Sherri Bell hit a single, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.
Caledonia came back in their half of the inning with three runs to pull

Centralia scored a couple of more runs in the second frame but the big
rally came in the third when the Selects scored eight runs with Theophilo-
poulos hitting a grand slam to make the score 14-3.
The home team came back with two runs in the fifth but Centralia
scored two more.
Defensively, Bell end catcher Jaime Palsa combined to strike out 10.

involved," he said.
A member of the midget hockey
team which won the Ontario title in
1980, he then went to Stratford to
play Junior 'B and then to the
Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario
Hockey League where he helped
that team win the Memorial Cup.
"1 would have never made it to
the NHL if it wasn't for the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association," he
said.
Former T -A sports editor Ross
Haugh quoted one major newspa-
per article as saying scouts were
not only drooling about Shaw's de-
fensive skills... "they were actually
slobbering".
Among the people who said a
few words in honor of Dave Shaw
was his brother Bruce, Jr.
1
He said the entire family is very
proud of him and then he has a
strong sense of community.
"Coming from a small communi-
ty, you have a tremendous amount
of support but a lot of pressure.
There's a lot of things Exeter can be
proud of and Dave's one of them."
Jack Underwood, a trainer with
several teams Shaw played upon in
minor hockey said Dave set his
goals at a very young age and that
he was always a player who was in
good shape.
Exeter deputy -reeve Lossy Fuller
read a letter from Dave's former
coach Jack Fuller that said, Shaw
had the ability, courage and the will
to win.
"All the kids in this area have
someone to look up to."
