Times Advocate, 1992-08-12, Page 18Page 18 Times -Advocate, August 12, 1992 professional baseball player Lumley settles in with London Tigers By Fred Groves T -A staff LONDON - Mike Lumley is a rarity. He is a Canadian playing profes- sional baseball and he is playing just minutes away from where he grew up. Lumley, whose family resides in Lucan, is a pitcher with the London Tigers, Eastern League 'AA' affili- ate of the Detroit Tigers. ' His professional career started five years ago when the Tigers placed him on their Fayetteville 'A' team followed by two years with Lakeland. Lumley's 1990 season was split between the 'A' level Lakeland Tigers and the London version which won the league title worked out there and they've got a dirt pitching mound and a batting cage in the basement." Lumley, who will be married to Cindy Gard on September 12, could be playing ball all year long as the Tigers' organization are plan- ning to send him to play winter ball in Mexico this winter. "It shows they areinterested in me." - Spores has played a very impor- tant part in Lumley's life, it obvi- ously helped him to start his career in professional baseball. ' "1 don't know how 1 would have done in school if 1 hadn't had sports," said the London Beal grad- uate. "It was an outlet." Mike Lumley warms up during Thursday's workout in London.
