professional baseball player
Lumley settles in with London Tigers
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
LONDON - Mike Lumley is a
rarity.
He is a Canadian playing profes-
sional baseball and he is playing
just minutes away from where he
grew up.
Lumley, whose family resides in
Lucan, is a pitcher with the London
Tigers, Eastern League 'AA' affili-
ate of the Detroit Tigers. '
His professional career started
five years ago when the Tigers
placed him on their Fayetteville 'A'
team followed by two years with
Lakeland. Lumley's 1990 season
was split between the 'A' level
Lakeland Tigers and the London
version which won the league title
worked out there and they've got a
dirt pitching mound and a batting
cage in the basement."
Lumley, who will be married to
Cindy Gard on September 12,
could be playing ball all year long
as the Tigers' organization are plan-
ning to send him to play winter ball
in Mexico this winter.
"It shows they areinterested in
me." -
Spores has played a very impor-
tant part in Lumley's life, it obvi-
ously helped him to start his career
in professional baseball.
' "1 don't know how 1 would have
done in school if 1 hadn't had
sports," said the London Beal grad-
uate. "It was an outlet."
Mike Lumley warms up during Thursday's workout in London.

Last year he was back down in
Lakeland where he had a 6-3
record and compiled a 2.84 ERA.
But he started this spring in Lon-
don and it looks as though the only
place this 25 -year-old is going is
up.
"They thought I'd be up faster
than I am,' said Lumley during a
Tigers' recent practice in London.
"This year I've showed what my
potential is."
Working as a reliever, the right-
hander just won his seventh game
of the year for a team which t
struggling to make the playoffs.
"I've just been in the right place
at the right time. We've had a lot of
close games."
Except for the Montreal Expos'
all-star outfielder Larry Walker,
and a handful of others, there arc
very few Canadians in professional
baseball.
- Lumley and London outfielder
Warren Sawkiw of Weston, Onta-
rio are the only Canadians on the
Tigers' roster.
"We (Canadians) don't have the
facilities, the interest If you look at
our high schools. we don't have
high school baseball."
Unless you live in California or
Horida, putting a baseball program
into tate high schools is preuy
tough, but Lumley said there arc
other ways of having it in schools.

The London Tigers are one of
several farm teams in the Detroit
organization and most of the
players are 25 or 26 years old. It's
not like hockey where players that
old would be well into their ca-
reers.
Baseball is different, it's harder
to crack the big leagues at an early
age-
Lumley
ge-Lumley said there are some
players who have been released
two or three times, picked up by
other teams and gone an to play in
the majors.
"There's guys who have been in
the game a while and they don't
want to give it up. For some, it's all
they know."
The Detroit Tigers are going
through a big shake-up as they re-
cently fired both president Bo
Schembechler and Chief -
Executive -Officer Jim Campbell.
Lumley said yes, they heard of it
in London but it doesn't really af-
fect them.
"We play no mauer what, we still
get paid."
London Tigers are all trying for
die same thing. a promotion to To-
ledo 'AAA' Mud Hens or all the
