By T.A. ghost writer Heavenly Devine
The second chapter of our
vacation tale, as if anything
could possibly top the bat
episode, only goes to show
what our life had become.
Things settled down to a
more normal pace the next
morning. After breakfast we
drove to the beach and, nat-
urally, after applying our
factor 25 sun screen, swam, played in the sand and watched the
black clouds roll in over the horizon, giving us the last glimpse
of sun for day.
By the time we got hack to the cottage, the rain was coming
down in sheets and I began distributing the pots and pans around
the place catching at least some of the drips that were finding
their way through the roof. We moved the beds so that they
wouldn't be dripped on and reached for the deck of cards to start
what would tum out to be a marathon Go Fish toumament,. We
ate our picnic lunch while playing cards with the sounds of
steadily falling water echoing around us both inside and out.
As our fourth day of vacation dawned dull and rainy, Go Fish
was beginning to pall, and we had read every book we had
brought from cover to cover at least twenty times, so we came to
the unhappy conclusion that cottage life was not for us. We
packed up the car and started home, all of .is trying hard not to
hide the glee we were feeling about getting back to civilization.
And then the unthinkable happened. Flat tire! It is not a pretty
sight to sec or hear a grown man extricating a spare tire from the
bottom of a well packed trunk in the pouring rain. I had to ex-
plain to the children that sometimes daddy used bam language
on the highway as well, but they must never copy him!
I'm sure you are thinking that as soon as we turned into the
laneway at home the sun began shining and we had given up on
our cottage vacation too soon. Well, you are wrong it continued
to rain for thc next four days, but at least we had no bats, no
leaky roofs, no cracks in the floor, videos, nintendos, and best of
all home.
This is one family who will think twice about taking a vacation
next year anywhere but around home!
Sometimes on rainy days it is fun to cook something with the
kids, or let them do it themselves. This recipe from Nicole and
Justin Muller is a great variation on the basic Rice Krispie
Squares.
