Barbecue with care STEPHEN ta4TWP, - `It's summetdmc and tho living is easy." The tiswwww4 days arc long, .r4.N7r.4 the weather's .& Ilse groat - a Perfect time to invite friends over for a barbecue. Every year, the precious summer months are marred by needless ac- cidents caused by careless use of barbecues. The Stephen Twp. Fire Depart- ment wants you to have an injury free, fire safe summer, so here are some important tips to follow. Propane barbecues have become very popular. They are easier to use, and faster and cleaner than charcoal barbecues. By properly maintaining your barbecue and fol- lowing some simple precautions, you can safely enjoy your barbecue for years to come. Always follow the manufactur- er's anufactur- ers instructions carefully when as- sembling a new barbecue. Use the type and size of cylinder recom: mended by the manufacturer. If you have problems with assembly, call a qualified propane service person. If you have not used your barbe- cue recently, make sure that the burner holes (ports) and the tube connecting to the burners are clear of rust and debris. Test all connectors for leaks. With the tank connected, open the tank valve and generously spread a soapy solution on all propane fit - tangs, including the cylinder valve on the hose if bubbles appear and become larger or increase in num- ber, thane is a leak, Never check for a leak uaiag an open flame. Tighten or replace the leaky ftt- unp or hose and retest. If you have any concerns, have your barbecue clocked by a qualified propane ser- vice person. The fitting that connects the bar- becue to the cylinder could have a rubber "0" ring near the end. Check the ring every time you con- nect the cylinder. Replace the ring if it is cracked or out of shape. Ensure the cylinder valve is com- pletely turned off and the valve plug is in place where the cylinder is not connected to an appliance.
