Salute to Hensall
peewee ball coaches
Dear Editor;
1 just wanted to take a moment
and "Salute" the coaches and help-
ers of the Hassall Peewee ball
team.
Their attitude is that all boys, no
matter how skilled or unskilled,
get equal opportunity of playing
time. as well as a chance to play a
wiie variety of positions.
At their ages, these boys arc sup-
posed to learn and develop their
individual and team skills. They'
should be able to be able to have
fun and socialize with other chil-
dren their own age as well.
It's a time for these kids to be
proud when they do make a good
play. or a spectacular catch. and to
laugh when they fumble or fall,
and to be given the chance to try
harder next time.
1t has saddened me to see some
of the boys on
other teams be-
ing so pressured
int() being per-
fect, that they can't
handle when they
111)
don't play flawless-
ly. They are being pres-
sured by their parents, their coaches
and their peers. Some have been
put on the bench when they aren't
•
having a perfect Bgaaiine. How can a
child develop akills sitting on a
bench?
As far as I am concerned, I am
proud of my child if he gives his
best. I feel that many players and
parents come away from the games
disappointed, as they have expected
far too much. I go back to one of
my favourite quotes, "No big ex-
pectations, no big disappoint-
ments."
Playing the t players all the
time may work in .thebig leagues,
but let's not destroy little league by
stooping to that level. All the chil-
dren pay the same fees to play the
games, so it is important to treat
them all fairly.
It is not important who wins add
loses, as we all can't win all of the
time. It should be a privilege just
to be able to participate in sports
and have fun.
In Hensall, the Peewees are giv-
en the opportunity to learn and de-
velop their skills. They arc taught
to try their best and enjoy their
games. With the positive "Play
Fair" supportive attitudes of their
coaches and helpers, how can any
of them really lose.

Doug Miners - to have girls' and
boy's teams. As also explained to
me, this will allow the boys, who
are stronger than the girls (even at
ages 8 to 12), to play their type of
game and the girls to play their
type of ball.
In an attempt to be conciliatory,
Mr. Miners suggested that a girl,
who was particularly strong as a
player, might be allowed to play
on the boys team. Since I had dit-
riculty understanding why this ex-
ception would be allowed, I asked
if that meant that a poorly skilled
player could make the boys team
no matter what, but that only a
good girl player could hope to do
so. Mr. Miners was very honest
and flatly said yes. My sugges-
tions that the teams be divided on
a skill basis or that the league
phase in some non-sexist ap-
proach, irregardless of skill, were
refected.
'tile executive
and the member-
ship should
know that neither 1
nor many people
are prepared to ac-
cept this degrading attitude. This
Lucan Juniors continue to win
LUCAN - It took nearly three -
and -a -half hours to play, but Lucan
beat Stonetown (St. Marys mid-
gets), 11-6 Thursday night in West-
ern Junior Baseball League action.
The rain
delayed nine inning con-
test saw Lucan starting pitcher
Greg Boshart coast through six in-
nings as he allowed no nuns and
just a pair of hits. Brett Revington
came on in the seventh.
Offensively, Lucan tallied nine
runs over the same six innings.
Cory Burtch had a double and a
two -run triple in the sixth frame.
Paul Smith added three hits and
Scott Smith belted a pair of dou-
bles.
Lucan 9, Exeter 5
In a shortened seven inning
game, visiting Lucan got on the
board early, plating three runs in
the first frame.
Revington had a pair of hits and
a couple of runs batted in. Paul
Smith -and Scott Smith each had
doubles while Brad Coughlin, Bo-
shart and Burtch singled for the
winners.
Paul Smith started on they Lucan
mound before being relieved by
Matt Munro who allowed just three
hits in five innings.
Futureames: The Exeter g rete Co-
op Juniors have got a busy week
ahead of them as they are sched-
uled to host St. Marys tonight, trav-
el to Lucan on Thursday and host
Listowel on Sunday. Stratford Jun-
ior Hillers will be in Exeter at the
Alvin Willett Field on July 1 to
face the WJBL all-stars.
Lucan shortstop Brad Coughlin got the tag down on a Stonetown player who tried to steal sec-
ond baseman during Thursday night's Westem Junior Baseball League game in Lucan.
reflects a position that girls are
equal, except when it gets down to
really important things like playing
ball. I am not suggesting that all
girls are as strong as all boys. Cer-
tainly, all boys are not stronger
than all girls. 1 am suggesting that
the girls deserve equal opportuni-
ties to play at any level which their
skill allows irregardless of their
sex. Those opportunities will never
exist under the curnent shameful at-
titude.
The efforts to provide equal op-
portunities for girls or women are
closely related to the struggles to
end other forms of discrimination.
In the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court de-
cision in Brown vs Topeka, the
court held that 'separate but equal'
facilities were not equal. "It held
that separation was in itself une-
qual..." (A Pocket History of the
United States), Washington Square
Press. New York 1942, (5th ed. p.
534). The same concept was used
to justify apartheid in South Africa.
If there is sexual equality, we must
forever end the notion of separate
abut equal in all aspects of our soci-
ety. This includes sports of all
kinds.
The attitude of the executive and
many others in our society is that if
we wish to end the selection of
teams on the basis of sex., we must
somehow justify it. I suggest that
the female portion of the popula-
tion is entitled to equal opportuni-
ties without consideration of their
sex and that anyone who wishes to
start or to retain as election pro-
cesses based on sex must justify
that selection process. The justifi-
cation must be based on facts and
not old prejudices.
I urge all
parents and players
(both male and female), who are
involved in this or other similarly
minded leagues, to not let these
conditions continue or these atti-
tudes to continue unchallenged.
