Letter to Editor
Questions coverage
Dear Adrian Harte
Editor, Times -Advocate
This letter is being addressed
personally to the one in the posi-
tion directly responsible for the
contents of this paper.
Over the years the Times -
Advocate has received various
awards but since the change in the
editorial staff in recent years, one
has to wonder if the awards are
still valid after reading the many
complaints and corrections pub-
lished in past issues.
The fire departments in our gen-
eral area include Hensall, Zurich.
Dashwood, Grand Bend, Stephen
Township, Lucan and let's not for-
get Exeter. All are dedicated fire-
fighters providing a service to help
those in need, whether it be as se-
rious as an actual fire, a car acci-
dent, or as simple as lending out
crutches, wheelchairs, walkers or
canes as the Exeter department
does. Some also work very hard
on fund raisers to purchase addi-
tional equipment not included in
their perspective budgets as well
as donating to their main charity -
Muscular Dystrophy. It's really
nice when these men and women
are publicly rec-
ognized for their
off-duty time
and effort. I
Two weeks ago
the Exeter Fire-
fighters' Associa-
tion was very busy fund
raising with a breakfast on Satur-
day, June 6 and a food bank drive
on Monday, June 8. The communi-
ty's response, as usual, was both
tremendous and greatly appreciat-
ed. On these occasions the press
coverage received was less than de-
sirable. In fact, in both uses the
coverage was Na. and didn't go un-
noticed by most of those involved.
A good newspaper reporter knows
about the times and locations of
any annual upcoming event but ar-
riving after the fact, especially
when being previously notified, is
not only inexcusable, but disre-
spectful. Had this been a serious
emergency response, it would have
been splashed all over the front
page of this paper. If the Times -
Advocate is to cover such events
for any one fire department then the
same coverage should be extended
to all area fire departments out of
co
y.
Fdepartments all across the
country are not only a necessary
service but are expected to be there
when called upon at all hours of
the day or night. Yes, people want
to read about that but the little
things those departments do are
just as important. Free space used
to be provided by this paper for
fire prevention bulletins and fund
raising events as a service to the
community, but that policy must
be a thing of the past.
The Times -Advocate was always
considered a good local paper, re-
porting local news and local
events. This is not "The Big City"
but close-knit rural and urban com-
munities whose roots go back a
long way. Community news and
social events organized in.the area
is what the local residents want to
read. Afterall, national and interna-
tional news is generally covered by
the larger news media.
Sensationalism is not the only
thing that sells papers, so let's be a
little more professional about

Lost and Found Club wraps up
CEti'IRALIA - To wrap up the
Centralia Faith Tabernacle Lost and
Found Club for the summer, the
evening began with a very windy
walk to the new property. The trac-
tor and wagon decorated in bal-
loons, gave the group a ride around
the property with a brief stop for re-
freshments and back to the church
for dismissal.
The weather may have been cold
and dreary on the weekend, but it
sure didn't have any affect on the
various activities held by the Cen-
tralia Faith Tabernacle.
The Youth Group started the
weekend off Friday night selling
turkey burgers and hotdogs which
were donated by Hayter Turkey
Farms and E.M.A. At the crack of
dawn Saturday, the yard and bake
sale began and continued until late
afternoon. Sales were very gaol
and thanks to the many donations,
$1,200.00 was raised for the build-
ing fund.
On Friday night, thene lAieta
