Local pilot flies in air search
ami rescue emergencies
By Mkrreite Mhos
LUCAN - Although Paul Rev-
iington of Lucan has a large respon-
sibility working as a crop inspector
for Agriculture Canada, many
would agree his volunteer work for
the Civil Air Search and Rescue
Association (CASARA) carries
with it a life and death responsibili-
ty some couldn't handle.
CASARA is a Canadian -wide
volunteer aviation association
formed to develop an all volunteer
group:of civilians toassistin aerial
searches for downed or missing air-
craft, missing watercraft or lost in-
dividuals. Revington says it is not
a job to be taken lightly.
"It's not a free airplane ride. If
people want to join it for that
they've got the wrong idea," says
the 42 year-old pilot who obtained
his license 14 years ago.
Through the London Air Patrol,
50 male and female volunteers
such as Revington are trained in
monthly exercises out otthe Lon-
don Plying Club to become neviga-
tots, spotters and pilots for initial
and secondary response search sup-
port for the military in emergency
aerial seareltes:
Revington says he eagerly pined
the volunteer program because al-
though he holds a pilot's license he
bad not utilized it for the past ftsw
years.
"1 thought it was ve y interesting
and fora good cause. The fact that
there was no money involved didn't
mean a thing," he says. Presently
working as a spotter, his main duty
in a four -person team involves us-
ing specific search patterns learned
in seminars to look for a given ob-
ject. The type of craft, number of
people, colour and any outstanding
features are the criterion needed by
spotters before they ascend -for a
search.
"There's a set way to spot.
Everything is very technical.
'Paul Revington of Luca» joined CASARA mainly for the pur
pose of utilizing his pilots license for a good cause. Here, he
is shown in uniform including a bright orange cap to make him
more detectable in case his rescue plane goes down.
You've got to know What you're
doing," says Revington. "It's very
professional," he adds. Spotters
are also looking for the Ground/Air
Emergency Codes indicating what
-1s1R lutred by-a-discressed oraft-or
individual such as fuel (L), medical
assistance (X) or that all is well
(W4.
Since Revington has only partici-
pated in one practice exercise thus
far, he needs to accumulate many
more hours in the air before he can
become a pilot of the four seater
Cessna -172 aircraft flown by the
club.
'Td like to get to navigator or pi-
lot," he says.
The weather plays an important
role in the exercise schedule of the
association as well as in emergency
situations. In threatening weather,
the group performs ground practic-
es by vehicle and the planes do not
perform search and rescues in elec-
trical storms.
In the case that the rescue plane
goes down, the volunteers are pre-
pared. The uniform consists of eas-
ily detected red, full piece suits and
work boots. Team members are
not allowed to sport running shoes
because in extreme heat they sim-
ply melt and jeans are also prohibit-
ed.
"If we ended up in water, they're
extremely heavy," explains Reving-
ton. Coming down in water is a
possibility even though the the sin-
gle -engined planes do not travel
over water because the London
crew covers the geographic area in-
cluding Southwestern Ontario, the
eastern shore of Lake Huron, St.
Clair Lake and river system, the
Detroit river and the northern shore
of lake Eric.
The possibility of problems oc-
curring with the rescue plane
doesn't concern Revington or those
close to him.
"We've got excellent pilots. I
can't be nervous, it doesn't pay off."
Despite the local hero status such
a position carries with il,Revington
seems to be involved for his love of
flying and helping others.
"If you went down, it's nice to
know someone's looking for you."
A cheque for $1000.00 was presented to the Bluewater Rest Home by the Bayview Golf Club
and Gillette Inc. after a scramble tournament held on Saturday. At left; Larry Hess of Gillette
and Archie Masse, owner of the golf club present the funds to Anson McKinley, a member of
the Board of Directors for the Zurich Rest Home and Administrator, Joseph Risi.

Conditional discharge
for assault
E7(ETl:lt A Clinton man faces a S1000.00
fine after being convicted for driving a vehicle
while impaired.
Arthur Hoggart of R.R.#1 Clinton entered a
`guilty-pleaon- heeltarge-es+d- heeewrt-wastold
that the officer stopped the accused on highway
4 approaching Exeter after being involved in a
near accident up the highway which he had no
recollection of.
Blood alcohol readings were 250 and 240 m.g.
Judge R.G.E. Hunter took into consideration that the accused was
presently auending Alcoholics Anonymous when convicting Hog-
gart with the fine with 30 days to pay or 50 days in jail.
Assault
Paul Seldon of Lot 16 consession 6, Elmville, received a condi-
tional discharge and an order to keep the peace for six months on a
charge of assault.
The accused entered a not guilty plea to the charge.
Seldon's estranged wife Cherie told the court that on March 3, dur-
ing a dispute at the Sugar and Spice Chocolate Factory in Exeter, the
accused verbally threatened her and physically hit her when she said
she couldn't take merchandise to their outlet on Main St.
Paul said his wife deliberately stepped in front of him when he
was carrying an armful of boxes and that he may have had physical
contact with her for that reason only. He also said he didn't or didn't
remember verbally threatening her.
Witness, employee Virginia Glanville, testified that after working
with both the accused and his wife for two years it seemed as though
both Seldons •were upset with each other and that the accused had
said some angry words.
Testimony by the Seldons' daughter, Rebecca Carter corroborated
with her father's testimony.
Judge R.G.E. Hunter said he did not accept Paul's evidence, be-
lieving that he did shove her in the lower back and that he also
threatened her while sentencing.
