When most of you read this column I will be in Hamilton, attending
the annual meeting of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church in Canada.
This national meeting of Presbyterians receives reports and financial
statements from our national and oversea mission fields, our theologi-
cal colleges, our national archives, and our pension board - to name but
a few of the boards and committees that submit information and recom-
mendations. As a delegate to this Assembly I received a book of reports
in ihe, middle of May and it was at least an inch thick.
One of the reports (from the Committee on Church Doctrine) deals
with the subject of human sexuality. On the first page is a warning.
"This paper may not be reproduced, quoted, referred to or used in any
way whatsoever... until it is received by the (1992 General) Assembly".
The reason for this text embargo, as I understand it, was a concern by
the authors of the report -that journalists would mistmderstand (at best)
or misinterpret (at worst) the report..
In fairness to the media it must be noted they have their constraints
and the nature of their craft means they must reduce an 18 page report
to a manageable length to be a news item. This does not mean they pur-
posefully misunderstand or misinterpret - it just means they have to be
brief.
The text embargo was broken last Friday when someone leaked the
report to the Toronto Star. There were also articles about the report in
the London Free Press and the Globe and Mail the same day.
In the past three decades, human sexuality has been so extensively re-
searched, discussed and debated in the medical, social and religious
fields one can fairly ask - "Do we need to cut down any more trees to
produce another report about this subject?" Obviously, the Presbyterian
Church's answer was in the affirmative and I would agree with it.
The church as a responsibility to preach and teach Christian beliefs
and practices, in sexual as well as in other matters, while showing a
pastoral concern for all who struggle with difficult issues in their jour-
ney of faith.
In offering their report the committee strived to avoid being swept
along by current beliefs and practices. At the same time, the committee
thought it was essential for the Church to explore and state its position
in contemporary terms as clearly and persuasively as possible.
The report has six sections. There was an introduction, followed by a
lengthy section on the authority and sources for Christian faith and life.
For a simple, parish pastor like myself, 1 found this section most help-
ful. Here, in a brief and clear format was an explanation of the delicate
interplay between Scripture, tradition, reason and experience as they
come together as sources for our knowledge of God's will for God's
people.
The third section dealt with biblical and historical insights. The sec-
tion which followed it looked at contemporary insights. The fifth sec-
tion addressed our vocation as sexual beings. And the last section dealt
with human sexuality issues such as, cohabitation, sexual violence, sex-
ually transmitted diseases and the sexual responsibility of church lead-
ers.
As the Canadian Press article stated, the report urged a traditional
biblical view of human sexuality that sees adultery, homosexual activi-
ty and sex outside marriage as departures from "God's created order."
The Presbyterian Church's report concluded that "obedience to the
lordship of Jesus Christ demands we order our sexual lives according to
the will of God made known in scripture. While we often struggle with
ow sexuality and need to confess our failures to so order our sexual
lives, God's grace is suff eksot to meet our need."
and Rachel Van Allen carried in the
numerous gifts brought by the
guests to be presented. to the bride-
to-be.
A fair crowd attended the Sunday
School Anniversary on Sunday
morning at the Thames Road United
Church. The Superintendent Karen
Etherington was present for the fes-
tivities and the pianist was Laurel
Miner.
The piano prelude was played by
Rebecca and Laura Miller and Erin
Parker while Judith Parker read the
first Scripture Genesis 2: 7-9.
The Sunday School members en-
joyed reading different verses of
Scripture and hanging symbols on
the tree which was made of two
large branches on the platform.
The congregation sang the closing
hymn "Part of the Family" and Kar-
en Etherington closed with a poem
about the Jesse Tree.
On Thursday June 11 - wallpaper-
ing and cleaning day will be held at
the Manse. The church asks every-
one to come at 9 a.m. and bring
your lunch scrultpsil and cloth.
On Sunday is Elimville Sunday
School Anniversary. There will be
no service at Thames Road.
Sunday June 21 is Father's 'Day
and Sunday June 28 is a service of
old hymn singing.
