Hodgins throws no-hitter
as Imperials win fourth
By Fred Groves
TAata!
EXETER - De'wyn Hodgins
struck out 24 batters on his way to
a no-hitter Thursday night as the
Exeter Chrysler imperials beat vis-
iting Shakespeare Black Sox 11-0.
The win saw the imperials
stretch their South Perth Men's
Fastball League record -to 4-0.
They have a busy league schedule
this week ahead of them_ as they
travelled to St. Marys last night,
are in -Mitchell to play the Mets on
Wednesday and host the Mitchell
Gladiators on Thursday at 9. p.m.
Thursday's game was quite an ac-
complishment, btttt,Hodgins did not
seem overly excited about it. -
"I was throwing the ball alright,
but it wren't a great feat," he said.
He added it would have been more
enjoyable to beat a little better ball
club.
The only base runners he allowed
were walks to Randy- Hyde and
Matt Linder and to John Noble
who reached base after a wild pitch
which Noble swung on and struck
out.
Prior to his no-hitter, Hodgins
struggled against some pretty good
teams in the Woodstock Tourna-
ment including giving up four:nans
off of five hits when the Imperials
met the host Merchants.
"I really didn't lose my confi-
dence. It was just an off game. Td
love to play them again tomorrow."
Hodgins and the Imperials will
have a chance to get back on the
winning end of things, as far as
tournaments go, when they travel
to Si. Jacob's this weekend.
Both important: The Imperials
almost have a split season as they
concentrate on the South -Perth
League but pit a' lot of importaince
on doing well at the tournaments.
"I feel its all important. I give my
best all the time," said outfielder
Sandy Hyde who has been the lead
off batter in five of the Imperials
seven games.
However, he said there is some
added pressure when playing in the
tournaments.
"It's nervousness, people feel that
they have to swing at anything. No-
body likes to be under pressure. It
doesn't really bother me."-
Third
e."Third baseman Steve Neil who
had a double and a single in Thurs-
day's game against the Black Sox,
be, stressed that both league and
tournament games are important.
`They both are important We
finished second last year and we
want to win it this year," he said of
the South Perth league.
With 11 league at bats, Neil, who

nin when she tired and had to be
by Shannon McBride and
lata Kelly Warren..
Neither McBride or Warren have
pitched this year and both did fairly
well. Beuesmann had to return to
finish the game.
The hosts chipped away at the
lead, plating seven runs in the
fourth inning on four walks, a pair
of Exeter errors and a double by
Wilds.

defense as they have not allowed a
run in three of the four league
games.
Early lead: Against the Black
Sox, Exeter took a quick 4-0 lead in
the second inning when Steve Neil
reached base on an ennr, moved on
another Black Sox miscue that put
brother Mike aboard and scored on
Brian Noyes' single.
Hodgins helped himself with a
base hit, moved on Kevin Light -

Good results for McClure In new event
ST. THOMAS - MIR Moly
McClure decides to doh,
she puts everything shires got into
it.
The speedy Grade II student
from South Huron District High
School is not only excelling in her
best events but she's tackled a new
challenge.
At the Western Ontario Secon-
dary School Association track and
field meet in St. Thomas last week,
she finished third in the junior girls'
300 metre hurdles.
That performance, along with a
third in the 400 metres and fourth
in the 200 metres has qualified her
for three events at the OFSAA re-
gional moet on Friday and Satur-
day again at Parkside in St. Thom-
as.
"It takes the doldrums out of
training," said McClure of taking
on the hurdles. "It's more technical
and it takes more concentration."
Her time of 46.8 seconds was
just not enough to catch Medway's
Katie Malone and Melissa West-
gate of East Lambton.
"I've gotten a lot of help from my
sister Susan and Lee O'Rourke."
Both are former South Hixon
runners who did very well on the
track.
Last year, McClure dominated
the midget division but this year
she's moved up and the times to
beat are a little quicker. At WOS-
SA she did the 200 moues in 26.5
after finishing first in the same

"For the first year of junior, I'm
ply pleased," she said.
Seven athletes: The South Hu -
mu Panthers will be very well rep-
resented at the OFSAA regional
meet as McClure will be joined by
six other athletes.
The javelin is by far the best
event for South Huron as three ath-
letes will be competing.
In the midget girls' division, Da-
nielle Miner followed up her fust
place perfonnance at Huron -Path
with another first at WOSSA where
die threw 27.66 which is better
than her 27.504t Huron -Perth.
Randy Johnson will try and reach
the provincial finals again as he
was second in the junior boys' jave-
lin at 48.98. That distance was well
off his Huron -Perth throw of 54.08.
In the senior boys' division, Da-
vid Schwindt was fourth with a toss
of 47.48. That is very close to his
fust place at Huron -Perth where he
threw 47.84.
Also in the senior division, Jay
Hippem will be in the shot put after
a firth at WOSSA at 12.46.
In the midget boys' high jump,
Jeremy Horne was fourth at Huron -
Perth with a leap of 1.62 metres but
he improved on that, jumping
1.70.4 at WOSSA and finishing
third.
Pres Lavier was fourth in the
midget boys' shot put with a toss of
12.77 metres. He threw 12.80 me-
tres and won Huron -Perth.
