Times Advocate, 1992-04-29, Page 12ASR If RADIAL Page 12 Times -Advocate April 29, 1992 Fighting vehicle corrosion Your car doesn't have to take a tough winter beating to show the effects of salt -induced corrosion. In fact, vehicle corrosion not only occurs in the "salt belt," an area that surrounds the Great Lakes and loops eastward through the northeastern states, and into the Ca- nadian provinces of Ontario, Que- bec and the Maritimes, but also along coastal regions such as Flori- da and California, where cars are cosltly '.attposed to salt -laden sprayeriiist. The culprit mainly responsible for the destruction of the metal in an automobile is wetness caused by rain, snow or ocean spray. The presence of chlorides, as in de- icing salts or salt water, simply ac- celerates the attach. In addition to salt, other factors that affect corrosion are humidity, large temperature changes such as warm days and cool nights, small pebbles, sand and acid rain. For ex- ample, av pollution poses a threat, particularly where levelsofsulfur dioxidest ohlpride are high. Dust control procedures on many rural roads in summer also add tcf the threat of corrosion damage, as do airborne chemicals in combina- tion with high humidity. Vehicle corrosion results when lower body panels and under vehi- cle components are exposed to road slush containing the de-icing chem- icals. Long after the snow has melt- ed, dormant deposits of road salts on vehicles can renew their corro- sive action when rewetted by spring rains and road splash. Over the past five years, auto manufacturers have turned to _the use of specially -coated steel to combat corrosion and extend the lift of automobiles. For a:ample, LTV Steel, the rut - don's third largest steel maker is producing a new electrogalvanized steel which ahs superior antieorro- sie i caaracterists. LOCO Steel, whish is protected by a coating of zinc -nickel alloy, plus a two -layer organic systenr, has passed exten- sive testing in conjunction with the auto manufacturers to determine its resistance to corrosion and chip- ping, as well as its sailliallaity, 1brmability and paint adheietice;. - Using sophisicated equipment to simulate the effects of years of se- vere weather and road hazards, LTV Steel subjects its steel to chemicals, humidity, and flying ob- jects to see what would happen to a car during its life on -America's winter highway. The extensive test- ing goes on daily at the LTV Steel Customer Technical Centre in Inde- pendence, Ohio. For example, the "Cyclic corro- sion" tests consist of placing steel samples in special atmosphere cabi- nets that simulate years of harsh weatharcrondideorbysspaaladvalt water spraying, heating, cooling, drying and wetting. It is designed to test for perforation corrosion, scab corrosion, paint peeling and other types of corrosion found in the "salt belt". To simulate road hazards, the dia- mond -shot test, which shoots out industrial diamonds against painted "panels at -4 deg F, evaluates the -chipping resistance and durability of the coated steel at low tempera- tures. "Because LTV:Steelbas created a Staie•of the•art ;4 g fa =steed, ptodttote, Iwo carr aper statadjustwor.;esgproceduresto meet the individual corrosion resis- tance test requirements of each manuTacturer," said James Schroed- er, manager of the LTV Steel Cus- tomer Technical Centex. LTV Steel is the only domestic steel company that is a supplier to every U.S. automobile manufactur- er in the United States. Other important steps in improv- ing anticorrosion performance of the steel occur during the manufac- -luting of the automobile, such as -''tile application -of a phosphate un- dercoat before applying the paint primer. The phosphate is the bond between the metal and the primer. Finally, the structural design of a vehicle plays a part in how resistant the vehicle is to corrosion. For ex- ample, cosmetic corrosion, or exte- rior surface scratches, can be re- duced'rby 'providing surfaces that are more resistant to chipping and structures that to not expose panel edges. Perforation corrosion, which rusts the metal from the inside auto_ body cavides, can be seduced if the ca?it esign aaioes^it with anticorrosive treatments and allows water to drain off easily. Us- ing steel sheets coated with zinc, zinc -iron or zinc nickel alloys is the most certain way to avoid "rust out". Just as the current car models are better able to withstand the battle with the elements than those of our fathers' generation, the cars of to- morrow will experience the bene- fits of the product developments and manufacturing techniques be- ing used by the steel -fliers and laboratory .*uto manufacturers Proper auto cam Itakes the heat off summer The last thing any motorist wants during the hot summer months is to be stranded on the road because his or her car has broken down. How- ever, problems such as this can be easily av ' • if proper, year round, main - r:. ce is practiced. It is •. difficult to foresee when your car needs attention, but the following tips focus on some of the aspects of automotive mainte- nance that may required your atten- tion. 1. If your engine is hard to start, uses a lot of gas, is sluggish or smokes, have it checked by a pro- fessional. 2. Make sure the cooling system is performing properly and check the antifreeze level. 3. Check the tire pressure and tread. 4. Check the oil. It's not just a lu- bricant, it also serves as an engine coolant. 5. Is your car's transmission noisy, or does it slip when you shift gears? If so, have it checked as soon as possible, since transmission repairs can become costly. 6. Check the hoses and belts for signs of wear. If a hose or belt fails, it can radically effect a vital part of the motor. 7. Have the brakes checked if they are making any noise or are not performing as well as they , should. 8. Replace the windshield wipers of they are streaking or smearing. Keeping you car in good condi- tion with periodic checkups can in- crease its lifetime as well as its re- sale value.
