It was hand to see but Lucan Irish goalie Bob Szabo managed to keep focused on the puck
during this scramble in front of the net during Wednesday's game. The DHA Development
League division final series with Mitchell is tied at two games each.

playoffs, ice availability becomes a major concern. Winning teams want to
play in their own arena, in front of their own fans.
However, that is not always possible.
Besides the Mohawks, the Stephen Township Peewees had to move their
final series against Sundeziand to Mitchell.
A view of.the five local arenas has Lucan with the longest ice availabili-
ty, stretching from August 1 to May 16; 290 days.
It used:to-be that the Stephen Township Arena had the longest season
because of.the Huron Hockey School. But without that group it's from Au-
gust 27 to March 31; 218 days. There was some summer ice last year
which increases.the interrupted schedule.
The. Babe Siebert Anita in Zurich is one of the oldest rinks in Huron
County and •poor insulation means the ice doesn't go in until October 14
and comes out March 31; 170days.
In Hensall, the ice is in for 187 days, from September 3 to April 7.
Fairs and special events usually dictate when ice goes in and when it
comes out. That -holds uttte.infamie -at the Rec Centre.
Ice went in on. September 30,afttr.the fall fair. The local junior and sen-
ior hockey teams usually extend .their post -seasons at least into late March.

the Mohawks.
South Huron facility manager Cam Stewardson says it will cost about
$5,000 to keep the, ice in Exeter past April 1.
"That's out of our hands," said Stewardso the, rdecision to keep the
ice in. "It's a {recreation] board issue. We keep ' in as long as neces-
sary."
Farquhar said after April 1 the rec centre has a where they split
the gate 60.40, after expenses, with the participating team and provide free
ice rental.
And what does it cost to keep the ice going in the winter in Exeter?
Stewardson estimates aptice.tag of 52.500.
"We lose money at the best of tunes. We lose more money in April."
Making the ice is a fairly routine operation which begins in the fall
when they begin to cool down the fluor, getting it below freezing but mak-
ing sure the cement does not crack. Water is added for 12 to 18 hours and
soon you have ice.
In the spring, removal requires getting the ice warm enough so it can be
shaved and once there is a little water under the surface, a backhoe is
brought in to scrape the cement.

fust period and 4-3 after 40 minutes. -- --- In all three periods, the Irish came outtliellitand
within the firs three minutes.
"We have to come out flying because we have to
show them early," said veteran forward Greg Muir.
He and Ed VanKerkoerte had the only goals in a 3-2
overtime loss in Mitchell Friday night.
Muir said the Hawks are a chippy team, ihid[auddad
the Irish know how to handle the rough stuff.
'If we don't retaliate we'll beat them. Butartt
back down.,'
Lucan opened the scoring just 1:04 into the game
when Tim Hayter completed a perfect pass from Greg
DePrest. Hayter missed two games of the series due to
a%eg injury which required four stitches to mend.
bish defenceman Kevin Leitch coughed up the puck
-behind his own net and Kory B tztded:itwwittt a
shorthanded effort. But Jeremy' Jemec cormected to
put the home team in front again.
It was 3-1 when Muir scored on a nice pass from
Paul Woodburn.
"I was driving to the net, tapped it and redirected it,"
said Muir of the goal.
Rob Bovine got ane over Bob S abo's pads with 39
seconds left in the period to pull the Hawks within a
goal.
"The goal thatt hurt uspwass the oneat the end of the
first period," said Lucan coach Ken Needham.
He said both teams are fairly evenly matched and
thinks the series could go the full seven games.
1 don't think they are any better, we're pretty well
hatched. They have more individual players"
1t only look 140 into the middle period for Jon
McBaehenn to make it 4-2 but again the Hawks pulled
to within one on Kevin Qulpp's goal.
But the third poled "belonged to the Irish as Wood-
burn and DePrestrdtwi.
In the second pallid, DePrest was hit hard after the
whistle by Mike iilsi, but referee Mike Arts did not
calla
ekes laid an outstanding game as he
made +i2 plies. Jason Brooks started in goal for the
Hawks, but came out after the fourth Lucan goal in fa-
vour of Dennis Scherbath.

A couple of illegal sticks cost the Irish Game Two in
Lues n Wednesday night.
With 1:41 left in regulation play, VanKerkoerle was
sent to the box for playing with an illegal stick and a
minute later he was joined by Dean Hammond.
A quick shot by Mitchell's Dietz with 18 seconds
left, sent the game into overtime.
After the game, Needham was upset especially since
he said die sticks are coming off the rack with an ille-
gal bend in them. He said the sticks have been checked.
""We did that before and -they areatlltillegal," he said.
Needham calk(' for two measurements against -
Mitchell and both sticks were illegal.
Both teams came out hitting hard in the first period
and did not worry about goal scoring as it was score-
less after 20 minutes.
"We have to react to that and hit back."
After Hawks' Geoff McDonald opened the scoring,
Looan's Jason Wilson responded with back-to-back
goals 17 seconds apart. It was 2-2 at the end of the sec-
ond period on a goal by Ulch. Boville and Irish captain
Andy Ross exchanged goals in the third period and

Red Wings 5, Sharks 1
After a hard-fought first period
which saw Sunderland etch a .one -

ed the remainder of the game de-
feating Stephen 5-1.
Sunderland's Carl Phoenix
opened the scoring 1:30 into the
game. but Stephen's Darryl Parsons
banged one home to tie it on a feed
from TimMorgan and Jeff Glover.
Unfortunately, the Sharks had
trouble finishing off and missed out
on several good scoring opportuni-
ties. Sunderland went on ter lucre
four unanswered goals to force the
deciding game.
Sharks 7, Red Wings 4
Backed by :a solid team effort,
Stephen's captain Jeff Glavin was a
one-man wrecking crew as he
scored six goals in a convincing 7-4
victory in Mitchell.
Glavin netted a pair of natural hat
tricks with three goals coming un-
assisted. Glavin scored three times
in the :fust period, and Nick Pfaff
made it 410 when he blew a Wes
Regier pass behind goaltender
Mike Phoenix.
After Sunderland scored in the
second period, Glavin began an-
other string of goals and the Sharks
went on to hold the Red Wings ai
bay despite a couple of late third -
period goats.
