-Qeabef-Scctoo/-emerged _as -the- overall -champions.:in-=Jast Wednesday- evening's

Credlton Social Club for the past 20 years,, heard students from McGillivray, _ Stephen Central,
'McCurdy, and Mt. Carmel Schools speak. From left are first place winner Lauren Webster and
second place finisher Mike Eagleson, both from McGillivray. At right Is third place winner Kim
Govers from Stephen Central. Behind is Social Club representative Fred Bowers.
Some years ago I watched a play by Eugene Ionesco. In one scene
a man and a woman were in the waiting room of an office. They ap-
peared to be total strangers. After sitting there for a while, in total si-
lence, the man initiated a conversation..
As the conversation progressed awkwardly, the audience discov-
ered some remarkable coincidences linking the lives of these two ap-
t Arrangers.
Both were bon in Manchester, England.
Both had one child; named Alice.
Both now lived in London on Bromfield Street.
Both lived in the same building - on the same floor.
And here is where the audience got the big surprise.
Both lived in the same apartment.
The two people were husband and wife.
When the shock and humour of the situation subsided the play-
wright's point was clear. Ionesco's play emphasized this contradic-
tion: though the married couple in the waiting room lived together,
they no longer recognized each other. For some reason the familiarity
of . their faces had left them unable to see the uniqueness of their
Our reasons for not recognizing a face are not quite as dramatic.
While living on Prince Edward Island I visited some relatives in
Moncton, N.B. My Aunt Margaret showed me a picture of Great -
Aunt Grace taken in 1912 when Grace was sixteen. The grainy, black
and white photograph did not obscure the fact Grace was very beauti-
ful. Aunt Marg told me Grace, my grandfather's sister, had been an
intelligent and charming young lady. It turned out Grace lived in a
farm house near Moncton and I insisted we go and visit her.
I hope my disappointment was not obvious when I met Aunt
Grace. Because of my familiarity (or fixation) with the Grace of six-
teen years 1 did not recognize the Grace of eighty-six years. As 1 look
beck I realize she was as intelligent and charming as had .been prom-
ised. But, for some irrational reason, 1 thought I was going to see a
familiar face from a photograph of the past and so I was unable to see
the present uniqueness of my great auni
A few weeks ago a highschool friend who 1 hadn't seen for 18
years dropped by my office. He bad phoned ahead - but even if he
hadn't I would have recognized Rob immediately. Same curly brown
hair and engaging smile. Same tall and angular build. He hadn't
changed a bit. Or did he look exactly. like he had in Grade 12, be-
cause I expected him to look the same?
Afterall, one would expect there would be changes over such a
long time. My daily experience of looking in the mirror is always a
source of amusement. How long have I had those lines in the corners
of my eyes? How long has my torso been the supe of a pear? When
did those grey hairs start appearing? Sometimes I can't believe it is
me looking back.
Is it pat of the human condition that allows the familiar to become
too familiar; and, then we fail to recognize our spouse. or an aged rel-
ative or ourselves? The face becomes too familiar - and so we forget
the character and personality of ow husband or wife that made them
special to us and why we fell in love. A photograph takes us back to
familiar. but faded. memories that have grown more pleasant with the
passage of time - and so we forget to celebrate the present. We look
at ourselves in the mirror and ask - "When did I grow old? I don't feel
-old!" - and so we forget -to -appreciate- the wisdom . and serenity we
have gained.
I wonder if wn of the attraction of Jesus's ministry and teachings
was his use of the familiar. While respectful of his Jewish heritage
and wise in his understanding of Jewish scripture he was still willing
to offer new insiOts through his interpretation of familiar passages
and by his use of familia objects and *imams in his parables.
The same gift God gave to Jesus is one of the many gifts God has
(given to all of us: Thegift.of recognizing, celebrating and appreciat-
utg what is familiar. Thanks be to God.
