EXETER - A powerplay goal at
6:44 of overtime took the wind out
of the Exeter Hawks sails as they
dropped the first gawk of their
OHA Development league best -of -
seven series to the visiting Lamh•
dth Lancers Sunday night before a
large home crowd.
"It's going tube a-teugh, close se -
Hes " saki coach h*ui ICemiek.
"This was a game of bounces and
- we jast-didn't get'the-ttghte les."
The contest was a nailbiter
throughout with great saves, gond
hits and many anxious moments.
Both squads had chances to net the
first goal but brilliant plays at ei-
ther end kept the game scoreless.
About 10 minutes in the Lancers
were -pressing Wheri'Exeter goal -
tender Jason Bukela slipped while
out of his crease making a save.
The puck came to a Lambeth for-
ward staring at' an open net, but
Dave Dalrymple dove across the
goalmouth to make the save.
The -Lancers -managed -to -take -a
1-0 lead into the dressing room,
when Warren Smith went in alone
on Bukela.
But when the teams came back
out for the second frame, Exeter
wasted little time in tying things
up. Shawn Chipchasc took a pass
from Larry Lewis near centre and
skated into the Lambeth zone
Chipchase faked a pass and after
Lancer goalie Darryl Bond commu-
ted himself, Chipchase slid the
puck past his outstretched leg.
The game got a little more physi-
cal with both teams dishing out
some hard . hits, especially Hawk
defenceman Jeff Dalrymple who
was a one-man wrecking crew.
Midway through the third period,
Shayne Robinson gave the locals a
2-1 lead, when he converted a pret-
t) three-way passing play with
Chipchasc and Nathan Blight.
Things looked good for Exeter as
they continued to press, outshoot-
ing the Lancers 14- I in the frame.
But with 48 seconds remaining in
the game, Lambeth won a key face-
off in the Hawk's zone. The puck
came straight back to Lancer cap-
tain Steve Plaskett and his ice -level
shot was behind Bukela before any-
one else could move.
The teams went into overtime
and after some itantic action at
beth ends, referee Paul Pettit sent
defenseman Dave Dalrymple to the
penalty--box-for -toughing. - numb -
eth's Jim Moore scored the winner
and the visitors added an insurance
Ozal with just over a minute left.
After the game, Kernick said he
was happy with his team's perfor-
mance, and is looking forward to
Wednesday's game in Lambeth.
"We've played well on the read
all year and we swept Lambeth at
home," said Kernick.
Exeter forward Derek 'Shackleton
was equally enthusiastic.
"Their goalie played excellent to
night," said .Shackleton. "Rut we'll
be ready for Wednesday."
-The HaWks-nerit1itsttie gdti+c'Will
be Friday night at 8:30, and after
travelling to Lambeth Sunday will
be home for an 8:30 start Tuesday.
Dishing out a hard hit against the boards in Sunday's Junior
'D' game, was Exeter defenceman Larry Lewis who gave
Lambeth's Shad Bogart a check.
