Times Advocate, 1992-02-26, Page 15As mentioned earlier this month, Times -Advocate reporters Fred Groves and Ray Lewis are in She midst of a linle wager
involving the two local.Junior 'D' hockey teams, the Lucan Irish and the Exeter Hawks.
Here's the bet, if the Irish go farther in the playoffs which should begin this weekend, then Ray has to wash Fred's truck. If
the Hawks go farther, Ray's car gets a bath from Fred. y
Although some may think so, this is not to pull one reporter closer to a particular ream. Both teams have their strong
points, here are some of them...
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - Some of the fondest memories of my youth involve watch-
ing the Exeter Hawks. My grandfather, who worked in the arena, intro-
duced me to the Junior 'D' circuit at a very young age. Consequently',
every Friday night through the winter was spent following the exploits of
our local Junior' D' heroes.
I soon found myself a rinkrat and can still remember making the long
treks to places like Lakefield and Grand Valley as the Hawks proved suc-
cessful
So it's for my mots that I must terrain loyal to the Exeter Hawks, and
hopefully my confidence in this years squad will soon quiet my office
cohort.
The Hawks finished fourth this season, two points back of Port Stan-
ley, .hanks mostly to a three -game losing skid, and for most part the
• squad.has been a.group of underachievers. But if. the fire is ignited and
the pussyfooting over, there's nobody they can't beat.
Up front, Exeter has more than enough firepower finishing on top• in
sconng in the west division of the now OHA Development League loop
with a whopping 214 goals for. The attack is very balanced and a quick
trip through the Hawks stats will confirm it.
Ray Cousineau led the team with 30 goals and 26 assists for 56 points
and is a solid candidate for rookie -of -the -year. Scott Schiedel was solid
all year long, a west division all-star, while Shayne Robinson, Doug
Clark and Andrew Barton have proven talent up front.
Probably the most under -rated player on the Hawks roster is Mark
Reid, a mocker who neued 40 points. Reid. Jim Dickins and Paul Mand-
ers aregreat at feeding the tops guns when tuned. and can put the puck in
the net on their own if necessary.
But offensively, the key to the Hawks in .the playoffs will be veteran
Derek Shackleton. The 180 Ib. centreman .hit for 15 goals and 16 assists
despite playing only 20 games. Had he been available.the entire season,
there is no doubt he would have ietrtained.among the league's top point -
getters. Rugged when he has to be. Shack loves to play. to green teams
and you.can't bet against *guy whastill plays the same for fun.
The Hawks defense on the other hand is another story. They gave up
190 goals this season, but late season additions and the rebus of injured
Larry Lewis will definitely help. Captain Al Blornmaert is solid and Ja-
mie Cornish tough enough to get the Hawks by. John Bell is the best at
rushing the puck, while the addition of veteran Jeff Dalrymple certainly
helps to round things out.
Shaky over the season's late stages has been Exeter's goaltending, but
Clint McCann's two periods of relief Friday night against Mt. Brydges
were stellar. If it continues, the Hawks are set, but if not, look for new-
comer Jason Bekela to put on a show.
As you know, 1 have a little wager with the Lucan mascot in the pic-
ture beside me, but I'm confident .the Hawks will go further in the
playoffs. Besides, Fred didn't even know how to put on his equipment
for the polite. "- _ .
The Hawks definitely have the talent, it's only a question of desire.
Best of luck to both clubs and here's hoping for an old fashioned Exeter-
Lucan showdown somewhere along the way. GO HAWKS GO!
Hawks 4 - Mt. Brydges 6
A bad first period cost Batter a victory .and assurance of fourth place in
the standings as they lost 6.4 tothe visiting Mt. Brydges Bulldogs.
Clark tied the game at 1-1 midway.l attottgh the Cost. but the Bulldogs
struck for three more before the frame was through. The locals chipped
away at the lead with goals from Nick Wieekowaki, Reid and Dickins
but it wasn't enough as Mk Brydgeaataved off the attack kw the victory.
The Hawks were fol uoate to and up, in forth. as Lambeth lost to
MitchelFriday night in a game winch meant borne -ice for the first
playoff round. Exoler will face Lambeth in a best-o(-aeeven aeries which
will most likely begin Sunday tight in.Eitgter.
OVER 25 YEARS U: EXPERIENCE.
By Fred Groves
Although 1 admit 1 look a bit like a vilhan in the above photo, it is in
no way any representation of how the Lucan Irish play hockey.
I guess I'm trying to show that these guys mean business, and they
do. From what I've seen over the last couple of years, there aren't any
stick swingers on the team so don't be worried moms and dads this is
good hockey to bring the kids to.
Anyway, following Lucan's 6-1 loss to the Alvinston Flyers Monday
night, it's still uncertain who will finish in first place. Last night the
Mitchell Hawks needed a win over the Seaforth Certtenaires to take the
top spot.
It's been a one-two race with the very much improved Mitchell club
but the Irish have played well all season and stacked up a 27-8-5
record.
The team with the best goalie in the playoffs usually wins. If that the-
ory holds true. Lucan will go a long way.
"1 think we have the best goaltender in the league and four balanced
lines/that we can put on the ice any time," said coach Ken Needham.
Between the pipes he islaiking about Bob Szabo. This guy should be
nicknamed Mr. Cool because he is very confident out there and never
seems to panic.
If he gets hurt, the Irish might as well kiss any hopes of going •to the
all-Onlarios good bye. Backup Mark Dunn has seen little action and re-
serve Dan Jeaket is probably not in playoff shape. •
Last year's leading scorer Greg DePrest left part way through the st
son to play high school hockey in London but he's back. Hard hitting
Tim Hayter signed just before the deadline and he is a rock em' sock
ern' guy who can dig for the puck.
Winger Janney Jemec started the season in Sualhroy with the Junior
'B' Blades but is back with the Irish. He and Paul O'Shea are still mid-
get age and split time with the minor hockey team.
For the last three years, the Irish have gone to the provincial final, all
three times Doming home as brides maids. This was supposed to be a
re -building year .and with eight rookies a is surprising they've chalked
up 27 wins.
"It's a big surprise to me," said Needham.
