Strong second period means win
LUCAN - The final game of the
regular season rivalry between the
Lucaa.lrish and the Exeter Hawks
was played here Saatrday night
with the Irish emerging the champi-
ons.
Both teams came into the contest
with a pair of wins but the Irish
took the deciding game 6-3.
Combined with a - 4-4 tie in
Mitchell on Sunday, Lucan and
Mitchell are., ied for first place in
the OHA Development League's
west division with 56 points.
Watching the game from the bench were players from the Ex-
eter Hawks. They were beaten in Lucan on Saturday night by
the host Irish.
The difference in Saturday's
game was the second period in
which the Irish scored three unan-
swered goals. Both scored once in
the first period and twice each in
the final 20 minutes.
"We played well for 45 to 50
minutes, than we had our normal
lapse," said Lucan coach Ken
Needham.
Exeter opened the scoring just
over three minutes into the game
when Nick Wieckowski connected
from Paul Manders and Dave Dal-
rymple.
Lucan's Scott Riddell made it 1- I
with only 18 seconds left in the
first period when he scored a pow-
erplay goal from Paul Woodburn
and Greg DePrest.
Deftest has returned to the team
after taking a couple of months off
to play high school hockey in Lon-
don. Needham also expects centre
Dan Brand back this week.
In the second period the Irish
worked away and at 4:55, Darren
Neil teamed with DePrest and Ke-
vin Leitch. It was 3-1 on a i:1
from Jason Wilson with help
Breu Revington and goalie Bob
Szabo.
What proved to be the winning
goal came at 14:41 when Steve
Matthews scored from Wilson and
Jon McEachem.
Exeter struck first in the final
frame when Manders scored from
Mark Reid and Nathan Blight But
Lucan's McEachem got help from
Szabo and it was 6-2 when Jeremy
Jemec scored from Andy Ross and
Neil.
The Hawks got one back when
Derek Shackleton teamed with
John Bell and Scott Schiedel at
14:44.
Schedule nears end: Lucan trav-
elled to Pt. Stanley last night, are in
Seaforth on Friday and conclude
the 40 -game regular season sched-
ule in Alvinston on Monday night.

Entertainers take
bronze medal
GRIMSBY - The Exeter Enter-
tainers, a junior level precision
skating team from the Exeter and
Area Figure Skating Club brought
home a bronze medal from the Ni-
agara Invitational Precision Com-
-petition on the weekend.
Team members are all local skat-
ers who have a love for skating and
are able to combine their talents
with a competitive team sport. Fu-
ture competitions include the event
in St. Marys' on February 29 and
they will be doing two numbers in
the Exeter Figure Skating Carnival
on March 8.

OSHAWA - Shawna Rowe
scored -three-goals here on •Sunaay
w lead Exeter to a 5-1 win over
Forest in the championship game
of a tween ringettc tournament.
Kelly Regier and Theresa Wil-
helm also scored for the winners
while Presley Maver and Jane Bal-
lantyne each had a pair of assists.
Goalie Cheryl Wein played well
throughout the tournament.
In the opening game played Fri-
day, Shawna Rowe had three goals
while Amy Edwards, and Regier
each had a pair. Also scoring was
Jayne Rowe.
On Saturday, Exeter had little
trouble with Oshawa winning 17-1.
Shawna Rowe and Sarah Szabo
each had four goals while Edwards
and Regier scored three each. Jayne
Rowe and Maver also scored.
The third game was against For-
est and Exeter won this one 10-1.
Shawna Rowe and Edwards- had
three each with singles from Regi-
er, Sarah Mosorinjohn, Szabo and
Maver. •

EXETER - Saturday night
was a special night for many
area couples as they celebrat-
ed Valentines Day at the
South HuroaRecreation Cen-
tre.
The Exeter and Area Figure
Skating Club hosted a dance
and club president Katherine
Ens reports it was a success.
Belles win silver
LINDSAY - While the tweens
were winning gold, in another town
the Exeter Junior Belles were on
their way to bringing home a silver
medal at the Marlposa Tournament.
A tough 17-11 loss meant Exeter
had to finish second. Jenn MacNeil
had six goals and two assists in the
final while Chrissy Morgan had
three goals and Heather Davies
fired a pair.
On Friday they won 9-4 on four
goals by MacNeil, two from Mor-
gan and Davies and one from Jan-
ice Sanders who also had two as-
sists.
Early Saturday morning, goalie
Katie Armstrong made 16 saves in
a 5-4 win over Richmond Hill.
MacNeil and Davies had two goals
each with the other from -Morgan.
Suzanne Steciuk had an assist.
Later Saturday, Exeter came up
short 11-6 to Markham. MacNeil
had four, Morgan two goals and
Andrea tJrlin set up two tallies.
Oldtimers win big
EXETER - The Molung Hawks
won 14-3 against Stephen Town-
ship this past week. Ernie Ahrens
led Exeter with four goals while
Ken Bergmann had four and Mur-
ray Little added two. Also scoring
were Bob Parsons, Ron Moore and
Mike Desiardine. Bob McDonald
had five assists.
