A Calgary-aasatti tag firm's survey har1.11111111.1

over the alarm.
Probably a great many farmers in the rest of Can-
ada would like to have the sane thing -happen: Let
the kids take over the family farm and keep things
going.
Alas and slack, there may be no family larnisio
lave to most of them if we can believe a couple of
economists. Erminomist Gary Hutchison of the Uni-
versity of Guelph sold a term conference this month
h M+italf of Ontario's farmers maybe forced out of

Township councils should raise their rules against
lot separations and allow many more severances for
housing units, he said.
• This idea, in particular, flies in the face of what
1>lblane+s and coral municipalities have been doing for 25
Ivan. Planners, too, have been relu tont to allow oral lots
sOaaaaso of the subsequent probkms.
It's fine to make such suggestions and to say that half the
-people now-tsirming should get out of it. Warble as well,
•to make starling suggestions such as'rtual lot separation.
mut 1 simply do not believe the economy can &bomb send -
the farmers in Canada into the squalor of ttie'cities

My suggestion would be to encourage specialization On
the land and"stop the trend to baggerawd4arger factor
farms. I know: the bigger the farm, the more money can be
tnad;.2'hat has been the trend for 50 years but why can't

I mentioned two ebonomist&at the begin-
ning of this column. The second is George
'Brinkman, also of the University of Guelph.
There is,ite said, one long-term problem
in Canadian agriculture: -"'!here are too many people who
want to fem."
I have been listening to -university eggheads and .farm
cocnomists for years and this is the first time I have heed
that the reason far the.agriwttial problems in Canada is
!tat too many people are fanning.
Is this a new bandwagon issue with the economists? Are
we.now going to be inundated with surveys lied a-peri-
ments to prove it?
My goodness, the farm population has been shrinking by
nauaal-attrition for almost a cowry. At one time, 50 per-
cent of the population:had a direct connection with agri-
culture. Not so now. Fewer than four percent of the popu-
lation is now.diractly engaged in agriculture.
Just how many more of these good people can we lose?
