Zurich design consultant still having fun
By Bay Lewis
ZURICH - Everyone is familiar
with the snowball effect. They de-
cide to go ahead with a project and
then as abon as they begin it sud-
denly becomes larger than original-
ly anticipated. That's the story of
Louise Mesmer.
About a year and a half ago
Meme' decided to pursue what un-
til that point had been a hobby.
She loved interior decorating. Af-
ter much urging frons appreciative
friends, Merrier finally took up the
trade because she had so many ide-
as locked inside her head.
"You can only change your own
house so many times," laughed
Memer.
But after only six months of
working part time she found herself
in a bit of a mess.
"1 just couldn't handle it any-
more," said Meaner. "There were
too many offers. I had to get some
help."
Louise's Unique Interiors was -to
begin with ctistorn -decorating aid
design and interior consultation.
The first job was to be simple wall-
papering in Southcott Pines. The
owner was having an open house
and Merrier felt it was an opportu-
nity to show off what she could do
and tried a few different things.
But the open house was so suc-
cessful, that Louise's Unique Interi-
ors very suddenly and very unex-
pectedly took flight. Marilyn
Fenwick came in to work alongside
____Memer--from the -latter's -farm at
. BB3 ch, and _the .company -
found -itself tackling 23 more
-bonzes by year -aid.
"We were nm off our feet," re- •
called Meurer. "It was shocking,
especially sicca all rd intended was
to do some fancy paper hanging."
Merner has taken many courses
at Fanshawe College in both paint-
ing and interior decorating, but
feels experience is more important
when it comes to decorative wall
finishes. She spent nearly 10 years
stencilling for a company, and last
spring went to Dorset, Vermont for
an extensive course in the field of
which she is now qualified to teach.
Her skills permit her to take a de-
sign from nearly anything, such as
a chesterfield, prepare a stencil and
transform it to a wall or ceiling.
The art is relatively now to most
people, but acne clients haveseera
it, they seem to forget about paper.
Merrier can apply the technique to
many different mediums, including
tiles.
Mennen tends to do things a little
different which is one of the rea-
sons she has become so successful.
For example, she likes to stay away
-from-using -he =traditional borders
around ceilings choosing instead to
place them lower where they can be
appreciated. She also enjoys using
cutouts and anything fancy she can
to get everything possible from her
border.
What nets Merrier _apart from -de-
signers is the fact that after picking
all her materials out, she turns right
around to do the work as well. She
thrives on sponging, ragging, paint-
ing and stencilling because she
feels people want a change from
just simple paper. Spongifig-and
ragging have become her forte, and
nowadays it is becoming very com-
mon for clients to do away with
wallpaper.
She also designs her own drapery
while another friend acts as seam-
stress. Thanks in part to the suc-
cess of Louise's Unique Interiors,
she too has been busy year round.
Memer said she really enjoys
working on older homes because
they're more of a challenge.
"The older houses have so much
more character that you can bring
cwt."
Before she begins a project she
has a consultation with her clients
to see just what they want her to
do. Some want to pick out their
own paper, paint or drapery while
others simply give Merrier total
control because of her fast-growing
reputation.
"171 do as little or as much as they
want," said Merrier. "Sometimes
newer couples just want to know as
little as where to place furniture."
She handles a wide variety of cli-
ents and recently completed the
new offices at W.G. Thompson and
Sons in Hensall. Although she is
constantly in -demand, she is very
much enjoying her work.
1 really like the idea of dreaming
abodt what a mom will look like
and then having it come out that
way," said Meaner. "When it's fin-
ished, it's me."

in the real world -- a sleigh ride,
followed by cocoa in the kitch-
en. Cheap, unforgettable fun.
And tell them , to bring their
camera or video recorder along.
What about freezing rain, you
ask? I find it difficult to say any-
thing positive to say about that,
fm afraid. Except that it may
force you to take a day off and
do things _around the house that
need doing -- like fixing that
broken chair or cleaning out a
cupboard or two. Wait till the
sand truck comes to the rescue -
and connects you with the out-
side world again.
And when the next blizzard
arrives, howling across the
fields, don't complain. Sit by the
window for a while and look at
the ,flakes. Isn't it marvellous to
live in a place where the weath-
er changes so much? I pity peo-
ple who are stuck with heat for
12 months a year, or who must
endure wind and rain all the
time, or who-- worst of all --
live in so-called moderate cli-
mate. A medium -pablum sum-
mer without heat, and a wimpy
winter without cold -- how bor-
ing! Didn't you hate it when it
rained at Christmas a few years
ago? A mild winter without
snow is useless. P
What about driving in winter,
you ask? Remember: positive
thinking! Every winter day that
passes without a problem on the
road is a challenge that has been
met, an achievement. And that's
enjoyable, isn't it?
