International hockey comes to Huron Park
IK Gota edges Stephen bantams 34-2
By Fred Groves
HURON PARK - It may be a
long way fox& Stephen Township.
Canada to Valingby, Sweden but
boys from both countries have a
common passion, hockey.
Saturday night at the Stephen
Township Arena, hundreds of spec-
tators were entenained by a fast
paced game which saw IK Gota
Team 77 edge the host bantams 3-
-2
IK Gota is on a six game tour of
Ontario which ends this week.
Their win against Stephen was their
first of the tour. •
There are several diffcrenccg in
the way the game is played in Swe-
den and herein Canada. . -
According to IK Gota's coach
Bent von Sydow, the biggest ad-
justment her team had to make was
getting used to the more physical
typeoLgame.
"Here in Canada you play with
the body. In Sweden you can't play
the body unless you have the
puck."
Another big difference is that for
Ontario players, skating and shoot-
ing outdoors is only done when
playing shinny on a frozen pond.
4tut -in Sweden, -team irraeticesand
even some games arc outside.
"Half of the games arc indoors
but we often have to practice out-
doors," said von Sydow.
Her son Niclas is the team cap-
tain and fie -said -they -don't mind
playing -outdoors. • .
"We don't enjoy it, but its better ,
than nothing," he said.
From the start of Saturday's game
it was evident that IK Gota was a
little better skating team. The rea-
son for that is they play on a much
bigger ice surface.
Niclas s d it is approximately
three meters wider and six motets
longer than the average rink in On-
tario.
"The surface in Canada is much.
-smaller. The -play is more intense.
In Sweden you have space to skate
more."
Lots of planning: IK Gota is a
sports club which began in 1900
and Valingby is 10 miles west of
Stockholm.
The bgys began -planning for -this
trip three years ago and raised all
the money themselves.
Exchanging pennants before the start of Saturday night's game were
ie Andy Glavin, left;•and IK Gota Team 77 forward Magnus Ullberg.
Stephen Township goal -
"We heard other teams come over
so we thought it would be fun,"
said Niclas.
''We have been warldng nearly
three years, ten weekends a year. It
has kept the team together. we have
the whole team here. No one had to
stay home," said Bait.
Niclas spoke very good English
as did his mother. In Sweden, Ni-
clas explained, English is a manda-
tory subject in -school beginning -in
Grade 4.
There was no scoring in the first
or second period Saturday night but
less than three minutes into the
third period, Craig Glavin scored
-for-Stephen.
Maguns Danielson tied it up for
IK Gota with a high shot off of a
fast break but Derrick Leenders de-
flected a Bill Hodge shot .to give
the locals a 2-1 lead.
IK Gota then went down to two
lines and Timmy Larsson scored a
pair of goals to give his team the
win.
After the game, Stephen manager
Perry Knee said; "it was end-to-
end, I was very impressed."
Tougher team: Coach Bill
Hodge noticed that although the
visitors were better skaters, he
thought his team was tougher. Iron-
ically, there were no Stephen penal-
ties and only three to IK Gota.
• "We had good goaltending ander
we missed some chances," said
Hodge.
Both IK Gota goalie Julius Dalen
and Stephen's Andy Glavin played
well. Glavin made 45 saves, 21 of
those in the third period.
"We get bombarded a lot. There
are four good teams in our league,"
said Glavin who was the Most Val-
uable Player for his team and re-
ceived a new stick.from MacLearts
Source Fpr Sports.
Hampus Tapper was the recipient
for his team and received a suck
from RSD Sports Den.
Glavin was playing with pads
which were formerly owned by ex -
Toronto Maple Leaf and now Cal-
gary Flames goalie Jeff Reese.
"They were only used for two
weeks and I got them for a good
price," said Glavin.
He said at first the big blue and
white pad were hard to get used to
because they are much bigger than
his other pads.

Official ceremonies saw the dropping of the puck which in-
cluded Stephen captain Bill Hodge, left; Stephen Township
reeve Tom Tomes, minor hockey executive Dan Conner and IK
