Rule changes to speed up ringette games
By Fred Groves
HENSALL - A couple of new
rules, which are in the experimental
process, could see more fan interest
in ringette.
At the second annual Exeter and
District Ringette Association Tour-
nament on the weekend, teams
competing in five different divi-
sions tried out the new regulations.
According to Doug Miner who
coaches the youngest age group,
bunnies; both changes are of a ma-
jor nature. One involves the elimi-
nation of colored sticks and the oth-
er gives the defensive team a
little more of a chance.
"Last year you went by colours of
sticks. Centre was white, blue was
restricted to the offensive zone and
centre and red was defensive zone
and centre; explained Miner.
With the new rule, it doesn't mat-
ter which colour of stick a girl has.
The first three players into the of-
fensive zone can play the ring. It
also applies to the defensive zone
where the first three players back
help protect the goal.
"It makes the game faster," said
Miner.
The other major change involves
second possession. If a girl has the
ring and a player from the opposite
team puts her stick in the ring, she
gets the ring.
"What they are trying to do is
keep the ring going. It encourages
the defence to come out and get the
ring."
He said it also stops a player
from hanging on to the ring in the
offensive zone.
"In the provincial finals last year
they went around the net 128 times
so they had control of the ring most
of the game," said Miner.
Although this year is an experi-
mental one for the two new rules,
there is a good possibility it could
come into affect.
"They're trying to take the bore-
dom out of the game so more peo-
ple will come out and watch it."
Make it to finals: There was no
boredom at this year's tournament,
